AGREED

California has a great school system–especially for the $$$. It has its problems, but so do most schools these days. Quite honestly, value wise it is hard to justify what we are doing. Thankfully, we can afford to feel that D has “earned” this choice and really would like to experience a different “culture”. What better time to do it than for her college experience. The fact that it will be so different has really added a wonderful dimension to her anticipation.
I do, however, have moments where the practical side of me wonders what the heck…the UC’s just makes $$$ sense. CC (and an inquisitive mom) really opened up her college search journey…the kids I know are not even exposed to these choices through their high schools.

I could have gone to chapel-hill for nearly half the cost of uva(im an NC resident). For me, the undergraduate college education is one of the most defining aspects of an individual, and Uva is where i have ALWAYS wanted to go. Money is very important, but there are some things in life that outweigh money IMO.

hey uvajoe: i was just wondering: when you said “UVA has ALWAYS been the place you want to go”, is UVA very well known in North Carolina???

Actually, it is not respected nearly as much as it should be. When i tell most people im going to Uva i don’t think they have any idea of it’s prestige. But does this matter? Absolutely not. The people that are not familiar with Uva, probably know nothing of Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia, Penn, Brown, MIT, Caltech, and all other top institutions. Alot of North Carolinians are very familiar with the ACC, and recognize Uva’s athletics but know nothing of the university. I think this is very sad, especially because Uva is not that far away, North Carolina does border it. Also at my high school our best students either go to NC state or UNC, not many go out of state. There have only been two people to go to Uva from my HS that i am aware of(one of them being me).
