What schools should I look at? NJ Resident, 92 UW GPA, 1280 SA, undecided major, maybe public health or political science

OP I am trying to figure out if your mother will allow you to apply to safety and target schools…? I know she said no to SUNY and doesn’t seem to like NJ publics, but will she allow others?

She likes UConn- can you add any others? She may allow Rutgers (NB is not a safety) once you show her the data.

The first hurdle is the school.

This morning she said Drexel is not her favorite but she was fine

Great! Maybe you can convince her to add another 2.

Excellent add it to your list.
:tada:
What about the Penn State plan I outlined upthread?
I’m assuming she wants cachet and in NJ many high end (or aspirationally upper class) families see it as “vastly superior” to Rutgers.
(Academically it’s not but the UP campus looks nice and even though NB has cleaned up tremendously it sometimes keeps a reputation it no longer deserves vs. State College’s classic college town feel, so hopefully the PSU brand is sufficient for your mother&any friend she wants to impress. And for you, for Psych, it’s a match so win-win).

I’m going to apply to a lot of EA non binding as that’s like less stress. If I decide eventually that’s where I want to go I’ll do the early summer thing.

I know they have good facilities esp for research so I’ll play that up to my mother.

Ok that’s at least 3 solid schools (Howard, Drexel, PSU) where you’re likely to be admitted that your mother would also find acceptable. :+1::+1:
(You can also say their Honors college is top 5 in the COUNTRY.)
Plus Stockton if you like it as a NJ safety.

We can keep looking for schools that the upper middle/upper class&aspiring upper class in the Northeast also find ok status-wise - St Lawrence, HWS …?
Once you’ve got colleges YOU like, are likely to get into or may even get a big scholarship to, that also passed muster for your mother, you can add random Ivies where you know you won’t be going.

Im tryna gather info on smith that i can present to her. I’ve been doing sat prep and hopefully my score gets higher along with trying to get recruited.

I could only find that it’s a highly ranked liberal arts school. Barnard was easy because of the connection to Columbia.

Do you think those reach schools would be attainable if I got recruited. I feel like those times for those schools are norm crazy. Like 18 minute 5ks.

Also, what exactly is the benefit of honors college. I know you get a separate diploma that says it but is that really worth it

I’m going to be real with you here. Being recruited in xc for these reach schools is probably out of reach. You have not run since freshman year, where your times were decent but not great. These high academic schools have already been talking to recruits for a year or longer. Those recruits will be submitting academic pre-reads this summer for fall applications. You are WAY behind schedule for recruiting. And these schools all have academic thresholds they are looking for in their recruits. Your test scores are below this threshold.

The good news is that there are a lot of D3 or NAIA schools where you could probably be a walk on if you are interested in that. But recruiting for the purpose of help with admissions at selective schools? Sorry, not likely.

Of course, this is only my opinion. But I’d put my energy elsewhere if I were you. You seem to have a lot of stuff to figure out.

Wishing you the best in your college journey.

Look up “Seven Sisters” (colleges).
At your school library, find a Fisk Guide for info you can use about any college you’re considering.
Just like with Barnard/Columbia, look at the partnerships (Agnes Scott/Spelman/Georgia Tech, Wellesley/Babson/Olin/MIT…)

Honors colleges offer various benefits depending on where you attend. Typically being admitted to thr Honors college means you’re sorta VIP. You will have a scholarship, a personal adviser who knows your name and can pass opportunities along, smaller/interactive classes, sometimes priority registration (ie., get the courses you want with the best professors), sometimes better dorms, sometimes access to research work with a professor, sometimes experiential opportunities… Many students drop Honors junior year but the benefits are great 1st/2nd year.

I haven’t run since last spring track. I haven’t done winter since freshman. I only skipped XC this year.

I don’t care about ivies neither do I want to go. I mentally cannot deal with an environment like that. I know my mom would make me if I did get in.

Okay, I think I’ll try and apply to some.

DON’T worry about getting into an Ivy by mistake.

I just dont know. She wants me to apply to so many and I’m not applying to like 30 colleges. If it were up to me I’d to EA and like ED to Smith or Spelman or smth

My advice still stands. I’m not talking about Ivy League schools. Many D3 schools are highly selective for admissions and as such, attract strong athletes who are also stellar students. Barnard athletes, by the way, compete for Columbia, which is D1.

Oh I didn’t know that. I couldn’t find their stats.

I’m going to try my best and brace for disappointing her. I don’t know what to do anymore.

First, you need acceptances you like. It’ll make disappointment easier to bear.

Im not going to be disappointed. She is, I don’t know how to deal with her reaction. I don’t care where I go as long as she isn’t there.

OP- hugs to you on the parental issues. Becoming independent can be challenging for a lot of teenagers and you certainly have your challenges.

I just wanted to confirm-- you have NOT taken chem or physics yet? I think that flew by in an early thread… Taking things like medical terminology and psych are fine- but they are not core academic courses. It is VERY premature to be thinking about any healthcare type field before you’ve covered off the basics.

I took chem and physics. I just struggle with them. I think that’s maybe my sign not to do it I guess. My brain just can’t process those fields. Literally anything else I’m fine with.
