What schools should I look at? NJ Resident, 92 UW GPA, 1280 SA, undecided major, maybe public health or political science

There are many urban parts of Ohio.

Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo. It has a LOT of colleges which could work for you.

I do not at all dismiss the political issues-- but there are colleges in areas which are VERY progressive, even if the state itself leans not-so-progressive. And since none of them are close enough for family members to pop in and out- if the overall academics work for you, and they are affordable, don’t dismiss outright just because you don’t like Ohio!!! It’s a very populous state!

The coast including Tennessee. I’m not trying to go into the « Deep South » like Alabama and Mississippi.

Rhodes perfectly fits your goals…I think it checks all boxes. It has religious required classes but with 4 different tracks. Your mom actually maybe happy and you too.

The only other Ohio Schools I know of is Kenyon (probably a reach) and Toledo which I haven’t really looked into

Is that where Rhodes scholar comes from? I’ll check it out anyway

Nope. Just same name.
But there were some Rhodes Scolars from Rhodes College.

Okay I searched it up and even though they’re Presbyterian they’re lgbt accepting

The pictures of the campus looks so beautiful. Thank you

Yep. My daughter is there and we are from DC. She loves Rhodes.

What do you want to know about Ohio. I grew up there and am there at least four times a year.

Cleveland is one city. But there are a bunch of others…Cincinnati, Columbus, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, for example.

Generally how many black people/minorities do you see? Is there a specific downtown culture for them? I don’t want to have to loc mh hair or something if I fear there’s like absolutely no community there. I’m not sure how well you can answer this question. I’m just tired of sticking out like a sore thumb/having weird things said to me based on race. I know that’s everywhere but I’d rather minimize it.

What’s the general vibe of Ohio? Is it more laid back? Do you ever feel « stranded »? Do you have to drive far to get anywhere?

I will I be able to express myself if I got into a relationship? Cities may be accepting, but would I have to stay in the city?

Do you feel like you have to leave to another state for things to do? Also, I know the negative stereotypes about Jersey and I do acknowledge why some people may not fit here. Would you say there’s a type of person that’s suitable for Ohio/not.

That’s all. Thank you.

You will find all types of people in Ohio. Just like in most places.

Perhaps check some colleges there to see what sorts of organizations or clubs they have.

I personally think the public universities in Ohio are diverse and progressive. Not much has changed since the 60’s and 70’s when students were active in a lot of things!

I think you need to go to college with the idea that you will fit in. At a place like tOSU, there are 50,000 or so students overall. Surely everyone can find like minded folks there.

It’s a HUGE college…and quite self sufficient. But it’s not near a major metro area at all.

Denison is nice small but has a 20% acceptance rate. 50k people? :sob: I just checked and University of Washington has similar numbers so I’ll get rid of that too.

The progressive thing is good to know. Is there any other less competitive small to mid size universities in Ohio you reccomended?

Yeah I crossed that off the list when I was told abt the rural area. I also knew it was big but not like 20k people. I don’t think I can handle big class sizes and something less intimate

Ohio is filled with colleges…public and private. At this point, I’m very unclear what you are looking for as most suggestions have been not well received.

I sincerely apologize for making this difficult. I really do appreciate everyone and their suggestions either personal preference or circumstances just make it hard.

I did add Asheville and Rhodes to the list though along with Marymount.

Thank you for answering some of my questions. I’m sorry if I caused any distress

You need 2-3 safeties and I am glad you added 2 schools.

Your mother or her friends popping in should not be an issue, as that could happen at every school on your list….reach or not.

The fact that Rhodes requires a flight is a positive, unless your mother has friends near the school. Ohio schools will also require a flight, so I would think about adding one.

Is Ohio not next to PA geographically though? My dad could visit me then. Wait let me do the gps thing

It’s farther than I thought. I thought it would be around 3 hours away, so that’s better.

This is college- you are in class. You are in a seminar room. You are in a lecture hall. You are in the library, dining hall, drinking coffee with a friend between classes in the student center, you are running to the gym or to an activity or meeting the person who runs the local homeless shelter because you have a big idea for helping the unhoused access primary medical care. You are at a professor’s office hours- and the professor suggests a terrific book which builds on the discussion the two of you had, so you are BACK to the library for the second or third time that day. Then you grab a snack with your dining dollars and then have an organizational meeting for the fundraiser you are planning in an empty classroom in the chemistry building because your faculty sponsor is a chem professor and she volunteered to bring pizza for everyone.

The notion that folks are “showing up” on campus is ludicrous. How can someone find you? You’ll be in your dorm midnight-7 am or so, but otherwise, your life is the campus and the surrounding community. And you will be in constant motion.

If you are more than an hour from home or your father’s house, I think you should put your worries about people checking up on you aside. This isn’t HS where you walk in the door in the morning and leave after your last class. In college you will be on the move- constantly. Find a college with more than one dining hall (there are many) and it will be even harder to find you. Breakfast in one place; lunch in another. Don’t these people have their own jobs to deal with? Who is showing up on a college campus at 11 pm to find a friend’s kid (and guess what- security won’t let them into your dorm anyway).

This is a non-worry.
