What should I say to my dad?

That is really fantastic, jinglebells85. Your responses, both here and to your family, seem appropriate and wise. I like how you are reflecting deeply on what to involve your dad with, and what to skip with him – that sounds smart.

I am also pleased to hear of your interest in psychology, especially given some of your family dynamic. UW provides outstanding departments for both psychology and genetics, and there’s a rich and ongoing interrelationship between the two. There are some exciting, recent developments in what is called epigenetics (basically how environment can influence genetic traits and development), one of many research areas that may continue to evolve as you commence your studies. Congratulations~

Maybe your dad is jealous. See this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xV5r8oRZ_c
Welcome to Wisconsin!

Make that during your time at UW, you don’t feel like you are there to prove your father wrong. You don’t need that pressure and that is not likely why you are there. You should be there to learn a variety of new subjects, experience all that one of America’s truly great universities have to offer, meet hundreds of new people and then look to the future. Make sure to immerse yourself and truly enjoy your time. It really goes way too quickly. Good luck!
