Am I missing out without TIKTOK? or TWITTER? Do you use it or like it?
None, in a traditional sense, unless you count this forum. For example, in addition to Yelp, I used Nextdoor to look up plumber comments/reviews last month. However, I don’t use Nextdoor for traditional social media purposes.
I tried Facebook 10+ years ago, and didn’t find it worthwhile. I found it to be a waste of time that did not have a positive impact on my life. My feed was full of posts that did not interest me. However, many people making the posts did seem to care deeply about their posts and could get offended if I didn’t like/comment. The posts themselves often seemed artificial, with many concerned about keeping up appearances/reputation.
I’d rather just talk to someone I know via email/text/phone, without the social media.
I use Facebook daily to keep up with people and it’s the only platform I am aware of that allows you to easily create groups. I post mainly on a fitness group and a fitness/ social group.
I use Instagram because that’s what my kids use.
My Linked in account is currently frozen as now that I am retired, I have little use for it.
I have never used Twitter ( X), TikTok or BeReal. No interest.
None of my friends use Facebook anymore. But, they do post on Instagram. I love the international connections I have on instagram from all over the world. It’s fascinating.
I use Facebook mostly to keep in touch of friends in a couple groups. And some spotty friends or family
Members from the past. FB becomes more and more to me as time goes on.
I myself post more on Instagram. It would be my #1 choice to keep. I curate my follows to include friends, family, food, home design, news or politics related follows. Some celebs too.
I have used Twitter in the past but mostly work related. I have not used it in a couple years.
Linked In is actually new for me. Never was into it before but more recently with a new semi retired position I’m reading and posting more.
TikTok is purely for entertainment. I may not visit daily but also follow for food , celebs and just some funny accounts. I like following viral dance videos to certain songs.
I have been meaning to join Bluesky because a family member in the media is only active there now. Just haven’t done that yet!
I admit to really enjoying consuming social media. I do work on limiting my screen time.
But if I could only keep one, it would be Instagram, hands down.
Elder millennial and while I still use Instagram, I am not a frequent poster and try to limit who I let follow me as I prefer to be much more private these days. I still have a Facebook account but stopped using it at the end of 2024 after cutting back in the year or two before that. I do sometimes still pop in to see what family are up to but most of my friends also abandoned using it so it was pretty easy to quit. I have resisted signing up for any other platforms and/or stopped using anything else I was signed up for. I have StoryGraph to log my reading but only have two connections on there so that is really just for me.
I like to watch music videos and funny pet videos on YouTube. The amount of AI generated crap on YouTube is mind boggling and grows every single day. Pretty soon I will stop using YouTube because of that drivel.
Email and text aren’t social media. They’re forms of direct, person-to-person communication. And personal email is pretty much dead.
To me, social media is any platform where people broadcast or share information for others to consume, and where people can also discover content themselves.
The amount of data TikTok collects from your phone is ridiculous. It has been banned by nearly 2 dozen countries and was going to be banned here too. Be careful!
I think the interpretation of what is social media varies among people.
I use Goodreads for instance to track my read/want to read books and I happen to follow just a few people but I do not interact with anyone or participate in any social options Goodreads might have.
Twitter WAS an EXCELLENT work social media page. It was a great way to stay up with research, health care trends, education, local or state related events, etc. But once it tanked (in my and others opinions) many non-profits ,orgs left.
Surprisingly, my kids still use Twitter to follow sports and reality figures.
If I had to choose I would choose my two instagram accounts- one private for family and one public for interactive globally, I actually learn a lot . I like that it is not words, just photos for me.
BeReal was started by D and her spouse, then our other D wanted in and I was there when it started. We have a group of 4- kind of interesting when they post. The prompt randomly shows up daily and it is supposed to be spontaneous.
@Lindagaf -tell me about threads on instagram-I haven’t tried it, and am not sure what benefit it would have.
@Hoggirl I am impressed that you have your own you tube channel. Without revealing anything about it in particular, what is it you like or don’t like about having one?
