Ugh, I just can’t do it!
Apple bundle that I share with H and D - music, news, fitness
Amazon Prime
NYT, WaPo (ends in November)
YouTube TV
Disney/Hulu/ESPN
HBO/Max
Quite a few Substack subscriptions - the Contrarian, David Lebovitz, Dan Rather, Victor Coutard, The Gene Pool, Andy Borowitz, Letters from God. Given the changing media landscape, I think it’s important to support independent media.
@sabaray : I agree, but at $5 or $10 each, that’s a lot of $$$ each month.
Many of these I have gotten a discount when purchasing a year long subscription. Absolutely an expense, but as long as I can support them, I will. It’s more than reading an article - it’s the live chats, the book clubs, the recipes, the travel insights - that make it worthwhile for me.
I just looked to see if I could determine what I was spending on Substack each month. At full price, $40/month. That’s quite a bit less than our gym membership. I’m good with both - keep my brain and body engaged!
Ugh.
My brain will try and recall what we have:
Amazon Prime
Kindle unlimited
Spotify
Hulu
HBO
Paramount
Peacock
Apple TV
Disney (but I think it’s free via Verizon)
Consumer Reports
Foreign Affairs (share it with my son)
Atlantic
The Guardian
Vanity Fair (they actually have had some decent articles)
The New Yorker (that is really for my son that we renew each year but I could access it but always forget to do so)
My WaPo (for which I pay $2/mo) is expiring. We just re-upped on a different email at $3/mo. I imagine when I got to cancel the current subscription they will offer me a deal. Last time it was $40/yr. They will need to do better
$40 a year is less than $4 a month - even for online access that seems very reasonable.
While it’s not my news media of choice it must be a top 5 (?) in print news media??
Well NOW I am getting a renewal offer (after we already set up a new account) for $2/mo! They first offered the $3 when I went to cancel, but we have set up an account on a different email. Not sure it’s worth the hassle to cancel. One says it’s a “core” subscription and the other says “premium. Seems like the difference access to archives and some stuff I dont care about (access to the store and option to get discount special prints. No need.
@jym626 -that’s interesting. I unsubscribed from WaPo last fall after 40 years and never heard from them. No offers. I guess they feel about me the way I feel about them.
Local paper (digital)
Washington Post (digital)
State-wide news substack
Wall Street Journal (paper)
Spotify
Netflix
Amazon Prime
Consumer Reports
Update: DH signed up for a $3/mo subscription for the digital WaPo but I just got a “please come back” offer for $0.99/mo, so cancelled his and renewed mine. No need for “premium” vs “core” edition.
Amazon Prime
YouTube TV
Cinemark movies (one movie ticket a month, never expires)
Libro.fm (audio books, 1 book credit a month for $15, good on any book and I keep the book forever. I also get to pick a local independent book store to get the proceeds, credits never expire)
Well, today we got our money’s worth from belonging to AAA. Had a flat, them came and towed us for free!
Same here–H’s Jeep wouldn’t start. We called AAA. The car needed a new battery; the service tech had a new battery and installed it for us.
17 posts were split to a new thread: AAA advantages
I just received a magazine (Food & Wine) in the mail addressed to my address to a person I’ve never heard of. According to the label, the subscription I never signed up for will continue until July 2026. Whatever.
Discussion of AAA is now in this thread. AAA advantages
Just subscribed (digital only) to the major newspaper in my new (as of 3 1/2 years ago) city.
Not sure why it took me so long!
The Atlanta Journal Constitution will cease publishing print copies at the end of the end of the year
Netflix
Amazon Prime
Peacock
Paramount+
Hulu(Verizon)
Disney+(Verizon)
ESPN+ (Verizon)
Gas n Wash Car Wash
Verizon pays for basic Hulu. We pay like $7 to not have commer.
All that is still cheaper than what I was paying for DirectTV. Plus we have more to watch than we can.
