If I see the word “cute” (as in “there are a lot of cute shops near campus”), it’s a female’s post.
If somebody makes a post only to say they sympathize with the OP, it’s a female’s post.</p>
<p>If a clear, cogent solution is proposed to fix a messy emotional problem, it’s a male post.</p>
<p>If someone claims to be a mother, very likely female.</p>
<p>If someone has a mom in the nick, very likely female too.</p>

<p>But invariably when I see a repeat argumentative and arrogant poster with a libertarian and instrument bent, if I look up their history they turn out to be a 20 year old guy majoring in engineering. What is that about? </p>
<p>Don’t get me wrong. I adore male engineers (I married one!). And I do not think that poster profile reflects male engineers at all (who are a diverse bunch). But the arrogant, argumentative libertarian poster happens to be a 20 year old male engineer :)</p>

<p>Many times people judge merely based on the username. People generally assume I’m a man until clarified.</p>

<p>When anyone posts a thread asking for help in solving an emotional problem or a messy social problem (or both), nearly all the people responding and offering advice and sympathy will be women. This is especially true for the people who post on the thread repeatedly - offering several rounds of advice.</p>
<p>Whenever someone posts a thread that is stated to be just “venting” about some problem, the OP is a almost always a woman. The word “venting” is a tip-off.</p>

<p>No, I’ve long noticed the exclamation points and the hand-wringing sympathy, but yesterday I was reading a post without having looked at the poster’s name, and the word “cute” was used. I immediately realized that no guy could have written that post.</p>
<p>Perhaps CC could put a gender option for personal information (I didn’t check to see if one exists already but some other forums that I’m on that have this option).</p>
<p>For some reason, many have commented to me that they think that I’m female - surprising since I’m one of those argumentative computer science types.</p>
<p>My daughter uses a male persona online and others assume that she’s a male by the way that she writes.</p>
<p>If in doubt, you can always ask.</p>

Sometimes I can tell by the way they are sitting.</p>
