What to do next after getting admissions

We will not be qualified for need based financial aid. My son applied for scholarships and we can see “Cash” under FA tab. Does that mean he will get some scholarship or is it available for everyone?

@Noviite Does it say:

“Your file is being processed.
Please check back in two weeks. See CASH.”?

If so, I think that is there for everyone.

@bookmom7, thanks! yes that’s what it says.

Students upgrade UT ID during summer orientation, and, I believe, a picture has to be taken for this ID.
The ID itself is a plastic card.

I believe that your financial offer after Spring break is just this, an offer. You can accept it, you can decline it or part of it, I don’t know about appeal.
It is not actual financial aid. Actual money would be released in August after UT gets them from the federal government, from the state of Texas, and from different funds and sponsors.

And upgraded ID is needed for UT accountability.

What is really important is NOT TO FORGET to pay for classes with financial aid BEFORE DEADLINE, or all the classes will be automatically dropped.
I believe, Texas parents will remind you about deadlines.
And if you go to Family orientation, you will be able to attend special workshop for parents about financial aid.

And when your student gets finaid offer he/she will receive a lot of forms, explanations, loan agreements to sign, some videos to watch etc.

You just have to wait til after Spring break.
FAFSA deadline has not passed yet, It is March 15.

@Noviite we are in the same situation.

My son’s tab says that his scholarship application has been received and to see “CASH” for financial aid information. When I click that, it says he needs to visit the UT Austin ID Center to upgrade his UT EID. We are OOS in New England, so visiting the UT Austin ID center isn’t happening until orientation. I assume that he will be notified about any scholarships/able to view the information without having to upgrade his ID before orientation? Anyone know?

You can call/write your son’s admission counselor to be for sure what you need to do. When I asked our AC if we needed to do this now she said " Yes and No" and then went on to tell me how to download the form, get it notarized then mail it in. Personally I don’t think you really need to do it until you recv the FA packet and plan to accept it and then need to use it to recv the funds. But, we did it anyway. It’s done. Our FA tab in MyStatus shows that everything is complete and there is nothing “required” to complete the application.

Subscribe to Campus Watch

UT police will send you daily emails about crime on campus. Start reading and learning what to do and what not to do if you don’t want to be a crime victim.

It amazes me how students forget to lock the door, to secure a lock or a locker, to watch after their own expensive stuff. Many crimes happen because student forgot cell phone/ ipad/ laptop in the classroom or on the table somewhere, or just left it on the grass while playing soccer, or just napped somewhere in the hall with valuables next to the chair.

I re-post housing information here

Application for UT dorms https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/housing

Private dorms, walking distance. Google them: Dobie, Towers, Castilian, Callaway House, Goodal Wooten, SRD, Hardin House.

Apartments, walking distance: Cameron, 24 Longview, Grayson, Montgomery, Nueces, Sterling, Karnes, The G, The Quarters, 21 Rio, The Block, 26 West, 21 Pearl, 2400 Nueces, Circle West Campus

Co-op houses: ICC Austin http://www.iccaustin.coop/houses/ and College houses (i will give link where they compare their houses to dorms/apartments, very useful http://collegehouses.org/about/compare-alternative-housing/

There is also this site, you need UT ID: http://www.utexas.edu/provost/housing/

Apartments lease is for 12 months. Dorms - for school year only, you have to leave during Winter break and right after May finals. Very inconvenient for OOS students.

If you are FAFSA eligible there is SMART housing. Apartment complexes have number of apartments that they rent cheaper, with discount if you provide financial aid information. The program is through city of Austin. Don’t ask me how to find it. Probably facebook and ask current students, or find real estate agent, or just sit down and start calling all apartments.

Just read this:

Woohoo! and yet another reason to have an Amazon account.

Send AP test results to UT.

Make sure your student sends this year’s test scores to them.

I still need to check but I remember in the forum last year that college freshman could see their scores a week or two before high school students when they got to freshman orientation.

Check the UT testing services website for SAT subject tests that UT gives credit for-physics is one. Send those scores of you haven’t already.

Looks like the Texas Parents Club opens March 10.

I also went to the official UT calendar and put key dates on our home calendar- winter break, spring break, payment due dates etc.

Here is link to find out what UT credit you can get for what SAT /SAT II / ACT /AP /IB /CLEP test.

http://learningsciences.utexas.edu/studenttesting/exams

This page also has information about UT tests, for example additional test for AP Government (Texas part) or foreign language tests if you want to test out from foreign language requirements (you are bilingual or native speaker of foreign language or just speak foreign language very well but never took any test).

These tests are important to plan what classes to register for, but you need to discuss it with your advisor during summer orientation - if you want to claim credit, claim placement, or repeat the class, especially Math when you already have your ALEKS scores.

Also, it doesn’t matter how many AP /IB credits you can claim, You will start Fall 2016 as freshman. And you will register for Spring 2017 classes as freshman. Your status will change to sophomore or junior in February 2017. Also, even if you send all scores during this summer and UT will have them on file, you will be able to claim credit any time during your studies, It is probably wise to wait with AP credits that you don’t need for your degree which will count as electives. You can decide later if you want these electives or something else from UT more related to your major. This can be also discussed during summer orientation.

When exactly does the ALEKS assessment come out? Ive committed to Purdue, but they have not informed me yet, but I had always thought it would roll out in March. Thanks.

Could anyone help clarify the whole enrollment deposit thing? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/1868812-enrollment-deposit.html#latest I’m a little confused :<

@skyblade1234

UT is very good communicating with students. They will send you tons of emails what has to be done, including information about ALEKS.

Explore this site. Use SeekUT Tool for data.

For those who are accepted into an Honors Program, don’t forget (like me) to go to the Honors tab in MyStatus and either Accept or Decline the Honors program. This needs to be done prior to May 1st, or you will be declined automatically.

Thank You so much @TXDad56 . We missed that acceptance tab and probably would have forgotten about it.

Thanks! We forgot too! @TXDad56
