What to do on a year of involuntary leave

Hi! I’ve been handed a suspension (not of the ethical violation kind) from undergraduate studies at a coveted American school, and they’ve agreed to pay my way when I return. However, in the interim year I don’t have family to rely on, and I’m essentially homeless. I have saved $1000 US (I did not go home for Winter Break), but the ticket home will likely spend half of that. I need to find work ASAP.

I’ve done startup work as a web developer and a statistical analyst (I always ended up doing front end and documentation, and when I return I may add English as a second major to Math), and I’ve also worked in a genetics lab as a lackey.

How can I spend this year? I’m worried. I don’t have a degree to put on my resume, I don’t know how marketable I am in my home economy, and I will need to pay for rent as soon as I arrive in my home country. Is Internet freelancing online as a writer/coder viable?
