Hey guys,
I am international admitted student and planning to go to University of Washington, Seattle for Computer Science this Fall. When my parents brought out the news to my relatives(uncles&aunts), they kinda demoralized them by saying that why not make him study in India for undergrad?( I hate these kind of relatives :/) Although,my parents are happy that i am going to UW, I want to make sure that these uncles and aunts don’t try to interfere. Can you guys help onto what should I say to them?

have you got direct admit to UW? else its a waste if prescience.

@donut9 Why a waste? Yes, a prescience.

its very tough to get into cs major. I am also having prescience but i cant take that big risk in education.

can anyone tell me what is prescience because i am also going to major in CS
as far as the topic of thread is concerned, i would like to suggest that you can tell your relatives that you are going to the states for gaining international exposure. by the time you complete your course, you would have learnt a lot not only about your major but also about other communities in the world about which we dont know much here in our country. you will definitely learn more about CS in a more practical way and ultimately bring a huge wealth of knowledge in our IT industry which would flourish your career and strengthen our economy
hope it helps !!

Prescience is actually called pre med. This is how Princeton Review describes it,

Major : Pre-Medicine

"Reality check: a Pre-Medical degree does not guarantee that you will be accepted into medical school. Pre-Medicine is a curriculum designed to best prepare you for the MCATs (the Medical College Admission Test) and for the rigors of medical school. Rich in biology and chemistry, this major dovetails neatly into several other related areas of study (such as chemistry, biology, and biochemistry). It also provides a solid background in physics and mathematics.

If you declare Pre-Medicine as your major, be prepared to forget about a social life from time to time. Colleges design Pre-Med programs to weed out prospective applicants to Medical School (read: organic chemistry). Med schools can only accept a certain number of students a year because a limited number of doctors may be licensed in the United States each year.’

Dude, prescience is just UW funda to grab you as a student belonging nowhere. You are gonna be nowhere until you get admitted to CS. So it will be waste of time, money and effort.

Well, I’d say that as an aspiring Med student, you take the most challenging courses in Bio and Chem and major in something such as Biotech or Biochem instead of a traditional Pre Med. Being admitted into a med school depends more on your college GPA in your chosen major and where you went to college rather than the major itself, I’ve seen music majors being admitted into Med school (so major is not a factor as long as you kill your MCATs), in fact I’d go so far to say that choose an “easy” major or something that you find interesting so you’ll have more time to prepare for MCATs!

and yea, tell your relatives to mind their own business, you got supporting parents and that’s all you need! I hate nosy relatives who HAVE to interfere with everyone’s affairs.

Reply bluntly when asked as to why you are attending a college in the US. Say something like “Because I have a chance to attend a university that is better than what your Son/Daughter can ever even dream of” :))

It seems like every “Uncle”/“aunty” wants to give their two cents about my education. The thing is that you dreamt big, bigger than they ever did. So, feel that pride!

@Tmadness,
I couldn’t help but smile reading your post. It’s really true, most uncles and aunts really do that. They even call you a “traitor” for “abandoning” your country. I guess they’re just jealous.

long answer:
when people asked me about this I asked them " why do people buy BMWs ?" all I’m saying here is that sure it’s no Ferrari that goes 200mph it’s just a more expensive car

short answer : cuz you can
