What was UVA like back in the day?

Anyone here attended UVA 10+ years ago?

What was different? What was the same? I’ve been looking all over for a detailed history about how the University has changed over time (not so much its political/social/academic standings), but more about life on grounds, stuff like that.

Where did you live? How has the area around UVA changed? What buildings did you take classes in? Any professors you had still teach here? Where did you get food? How have the various facilities on UVA changed?

Very interested in these kinds of things, thanks!

The first time I visited (I did not go) it was all male undergrad. Going coed was a huge change.

It was probably a lot better than it is now (not that it isn’t great now). Fewer political groups, more partying, etc.

It had that reputation. Easters was supposed to be a near riot. I could not get past the all male aspect. The campus was smaller and more quaint overall. The Corner was very similar to now with a few different store names. The town pretty much ended where the US 29 retail strip just begins now on the north side.

Bah, it sounded worse.

“It was probably a lot better than it is now”

I don’t know…it was probably less diverse, more elitist, less welcoming of certain groups, I guess it depends on how one chooses to define “better”.

both my parents graduated in 88. my mom was a transfer though to mcintyre

they were both oos which i thonk is kinda weird. there was all the partying, my dad transfered out of engineering to the college probably largely due to that…

i think it was a lot the same, new buildings and alll but when my mom & i went for dotl this year we went by all her residences etc and it hadnt changed much. the corner changed a little, built up a little more but mincers was there then of course…

one thing that changed was fin aid for oos. my dad was so poor they gave him instate tuition… not for me, though. sigh, so i wont be going there next year =/
