What will the admission status be after paying the deposit without attendance?

If a student has paid the deposit but does not attend, what will the admission status be? Thank you for your answer.

If you pay your deposit but then don’t enroll by registering for classes and paying for your first semester, it will be the same as if you never paid your deposit. Your deposit just holds your place but if you don’t follow through nothing happens except you will lose the money. Your admittance status will be an admitted student that never enrolled, the same as if you hadn’t paid your deposit.

If you want to defer enrollment, you have to request it and get approved. If your child just doesn’t show up then you should expect colleges to treat that as a rejection of their offer. You’ll lose your deposit and probably forfeit your child’s place in the class.

Adding…you can only deposit at one school (not counting separate housing deposits). So if they don’t go to the deposited school…what is the plan?

A student may try the other school first. If it isn’t good fit, can the student come back to register for the school that may grant enrollment deferral? In addition, for enrollment deferral, is the deposit required?

If you have an approved deferral you can later enrol. Some colleges require that you NOT enrol in another college after getting a deferral. Colleges don’t like you “trying out” another school.

If you pay your deposit and just don’t show up without getting a deferral you will not be eligible to later enrol, unless the college is desperate for warm bodies to show up and pay tuition.

So it sounds like you want to deposit at two schools, defer your attendance at one while you try the other, and then come back to the first if the second doesn’t work out well

First, it is against the rules to double deposit.

Second, in my limited experience, if you request a deferral, they want to know what you plan to do during that deferral before granting it. Trying out another school would not be a good answer, and they probably wouldn’t grant that deferral.

The best way forward is to pick the school you like best. If it doesn’t work out, apply to transfer.

So I think this year’s scenario is different than any other year. We are trying to figure it out. School #1 choice waiting on financial aid appeal, May 1st deadline. School #2/was May 1st but changed to June 1st we did not get a chance to visit but perhaps we could in May if things change. School #3/May 1st.

Reached out to School #1 who said they might not get us an answer by May 1st but could extend their deadline. So in a scenario like this is it frowned upon to put more than one deposit.

We are in the NYC area, which is complicating things. School #1 is utilizing some of its space to help with COVID effort which is slowing things down there I believe. School #2 became a factor when we did the layout of costs based on successful vs unsuccessful appeal. School #3 gave a very reasonable package so I do not want to miss out if #1 doesn’t come through and we get to see #2 and it doesn’t seem like it will work.

Thoughts appreciated!

You are essentially looking at a complex waiting list situation.

Deposit at #3.

If #1 comes through with the money, deposit there. Then thank #3 very profusely and tell them that your plans have changed, and let them know that you won’t attend.

If #1 doesn’t come through with the money, and you have a chance to check out #2 and decide you do like it better than #3, then deposit at #2, and follow up with the profuse thanks and plans have changed steps with #3.

Thanks for your thoughts. I had reached out to our guidance department and they stated it was unethical and the both schools schools could rescind their offers. You think that is true this year? I get that in a typical year where everyone is using a May 1st deadline and were not sheltered in place type of year, but this is different. We very close to NYC and now families feeling the pressure are traveling to look at schools/areas … defeats the purpose of shelter in place. I can’t seem to find a tread dedicated to the issue of deposits this year is there one?

There was another thread on double depositing, but it was closed because common app clearly states double depositing is not allowed.

While I doubt that schools will rescind offers this year for double depositing, your GC won’t send a final transcript to two schools. Your student might not be able to participate in certain processes without submission of final transcript…things like choosing housing, taking placement tests, registering for courses might all be prohibited.

Seems like you can still do the plan happymom laid out in #8. There are never two deposits outstanding, it’s just like in prior years if you deposit at another school by the May 1 deadline, then get off a waitlist later, you accept the waitlist offer and tell school #1 you aren’t coming (likely losing your deposit in the process).
