What would be my chances?

Greetings,

I come from Poland and I am planning to apply to several universities in United States. I still have time, so I was wondering if you could judge my chances on getting in and say what would use improvement etc.

My major is going to be economics. I want to apply to UCLA, UCB, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UT Austin, Rice, UArizona, UChicago, UFlorida, Vandy. Those are rather southern schools, I like this area more. However, I might also consider applying to some in north, like NYU, Boston University. Perhaps UMichigan will also appear on my list.

My SAT is 2020, GPA will be around 4.0 (We have 1-6 scale in Poland, where 6 is given for knowelage you aren’t tought in classes), SAT II: US History 700, Math II 660.
I am president of my class, write for school newspaper, play football, do a lot of community service.

UCLA - slight match
UCB - slight reach
UCD - safety
UCSD - safety
UT - match
Rice - reach
UArizona - safety
UChicago - reach
UFlorida - safety
Vanderbilt - slight match
NYU - slight reach
BU - match
UMichigan - match

You have pretty good selections of university but I would really re-evaluate which ones you “really” would like to apply and attend since applying to 13 schools is pricey and useless. Good luck.

RealM, would you mind explaining how you got those estimates? For example, why do think it would be easier for the OP to get into Berkeley or UT Austin than Rice? (UT Austin, for example, appears to be less selective because it is legally required to admit all in-state applicants in the top 10% of their class. But that rule also makes it extremely difficult for applicants who are not part of that group because the university only has so much space.)

Kvasek, my first impression was that your grades (that 4.0 GPA is out of 6, correct?) and SAT II scores look lower than what I think would be expected for admission to many of the colleges you are interested in. On the other hand, being from Poland (not a country well-represented at US colleges) and being able to pay the full sticker price (I assume?) will help.

Thanks for those replys, guys.

Yea, I am certainly going to narrow list of schools I will apply to. For now I am just wondering what to improve, being admitted to which is realistic for now etc.

Mods, please move this to the chances forum.

As a fellow international applicant, I recommend you work hard on raising your SATs and getting some more good ECs.

Have you visited the closest office of EducationUSA [Educational Advising Centers ? EducationUSA](http://www.educationusa.state.gov/centers/) and run your list by the counselors there? They are the experts on helping students in your country find good places to study in the US, and should be able to give you an estimate of your chances at each of these schools.
