When D1 was a little girl, she told me she wanted to work at a tollbooth on the Dallas North Tollway because “people just throw money at you!” :D

She’s actually going for her Ph.D in clinical psychology.

D2 told me she wanted to grow up and become a cashier at a grocery store. On the cusp of her high school graduation, I asked her what she wants to be when she grows up. She answered “a cashier at a grocery store.” Sigh. That kid.

D1 wanted to work at the Hardee’s drive thru so she could have unlimited egg & cheese biscuits. She is graduating from college next week and heading to a consulting job in DC.

D2 would say, “What? Work? Why would I want to work?”

My S told us for years he wanted to be a crash dummy when he grew up. He loved the commercials (and the toy that spawned from them). He was adamant. In fact, in his law school admissions essay he wrote about that. He just finished his 1st year of law school; he wants to work in digital entertainment and video game industry.

D1 wanted to be a waitress. She used to walk around with a notepad to take orders from us, every time we asked for something she would say, “I am sorry, but we are out,” (we lived in NYC) then asked for our credit card to swipe at the end.

She is in finance now, I guess still taking money from people.

D2 wanted to be a gardener, doctor (because of House), a writer, a baker…

At the moment, she is pre-law. Who knows what she will be in 4 years.

my DS '13 wanted to be a hobo when he grew up and ride the rails with his best friend. Now that he’s almost a HS Senior, he’s stuck deciding between mechanical engineering and video game design.

S wanted to be a professional basketball player when he was in fourth grade and then he stopped growing at 5’7". Today, he says he’s going to follow his friend in a start up doing graphic design.

I found a 3rd grade project of my D’s titled “All About Me” where she declared that she wanted to be a lawyer when she grew up. Today, she is pre law with a secret desire to play in the LPGA.

D3 announced in kindergarten that she wanted to be a nudist when she grew up. I think it was because she thought her jeans were uncomfortable. She is a not for profit management major now and is usually fully clothed (as far as I know, anyhow).

When DS2 was five years old he wanted to be the guy at the grocery store check out that asked you if wanted paper or plastic.

He gave up on that lofty goal and is now an English/creative writing major. I just hope he gets a job after graduation so he does not have to rely on his original career choice :)

S1 wanted to be a carpenter. We had someone who handled the kitchen renovation for us who was a really fun guy, and S1 decided it would be fun to be like him. Thankfully, he’s now getting a doctorate in psychology.

We used to despair that S2 would grow up to be a hobo. His favorite activity was taking a box that a refrigerator came in and creating a “house” out of it. He lived in it for about two weeks. Thankfully, he’s now learning everything about health care computer systems.

VH, aw…I like S2s creative spirit. As that was my favorite activity age 7, can totally relate.

My S was indoctrinated into baseball as a religion at an early age, and spent every moment throwing balls and catching them, dreaming of stadiums. But he loved numbers and money, and is now doing well in his financially oriented classes in grad school, despite doing nothing like this in undergrad. He still likes money. We’ll see where it leads.

S1 wanted to be a tornado chaser. He’s now in grad school getting his PhD in physics.

S2, in elementary school, wanted to be a pianist/tennis player/dentist (all 3 together). By middle school, it was sports journalism/broadcasting (he’d call games while he was watching them or call imaginary games). By his junior year in HS, he was interested in public policy, and that’s what he just got his degree in.

My kids didn’t really discuss jobs as such, but it was obvious what they liked to do.
My oldest was a writer/artist & my youngest is very physically active.
When she was little she said she wanted to be a ballet dancer/police/firefighter.
This was at the same time.

Oldest is still very creative, she got her biology degree, next month will receive her masters in teaching. With an eye towards helping other teachers with science curriculum.

Youngest is still in school in environmental sciences.
