My daughter wanted to be an artist and a nanny. Probably because she was enamored of the wonderful nanny to our next door neighbors, who was going to art school in the evenings (and now works painting murals and specialty finishes). Now D’s a psych major planning to eventually become an Occupational Therapist.

S wanted to be a businessman. He was going to carry his briefcase and his stuffed bear and ride the train to work every day, just like his dad. Now he’s in finance, and sure enough he rides the train to work every day. But he has a messenger bag and so far as I know he doesn’t bring his bear with him.

2 of my kids must be weird, they are actually doing what they said…S1 wanted to go to nyc and become an actor (lied to the 2nd grade teacher and said he had a santa suit so he would get the “lead” in the xmas play)… went to AADA in nyc!

S2 wanted to be a “scientist”… now a chem/bio major with plans for md/phd for medical research

S3 may be another story…17 and has no clue what he wants to be.

now me… i wanted to be a nun and have 7 kids! :)

D1 has a tiara on top of her desktop, given to her by her boss. It was ordered from Amazon. It came about because one day she was frustrated by all the extra work she was doing for people, she said, “For all the crap work I do, I deserve a tiara.” It is a very large tiara.

Geez, my husband is a carpenter. Thankfully, he didn’t get his doctorate in psychology.

My daughter wanted to be Buzz Lightyear or Michael Flatley, she never liked the second fiddle girl roles. Now she is working toward being a physician assistant.

Two things come to mind…first when she was 4 she wanted to play basketball in the Olympics; and second when she was 6 she wanted to be a “drummest” - today she is a fashion design student with an emphasis in couture, currently creating a line of deconstructed and then reconstructed vintage clothing. She is also currently illustrating books, actively working on # 3 of 4.

On his 1st grade student conference work sheet S2 wrote as his long term goal “total world domination.” He now wants to write. I suspect he has not really given up on his first grade goal, he just has a sly, conniving plan. Look out.

DS came home in first grade with"fisix" written down on piece of paper as his future career. Not sure how he came up with that other than I would sometimes answer"physics" when he asked “why?” Now he is halfway to being a physicist.

My older son wrote in his 5th grade autobiography that he wanted to be a computer programmer and detailed all the programs he already knew. That’s what he’s doing. But at three he wanted to be a train engineer. I’d take him down to the train station and we’d wave at the trains and the engineers would toot their horns.

Younger son never knew what he wanted to do. Still doesn’t really, but he’s studying international relations. I’m guess he’ll end up in the NGO world.

When I was a kid, I think I wrote that I wanted to be a doctor, singer, actress, or maybe an artist. When I left for college, I thought I wanted to be an occupational therapist, then an engineer, then a guidance counselor, and finally I’ve settled on professor, starting my PhD in cognitive psychology in the fall.

My little brother just always wanted to make money. When he was 6 or so, he would steal the household essentials (namely the toilet paper and the remote control), set up a fort in the living room, and charge my parents somewhere between a nickle and a quarter to get them back. In high school he stumbled into a CAD class and loved it, so he went the engineering route.

D1 wanted to be a flute-playing, helicopter-piloting, kindergarten teacher when she was little. She discovered drums and is a software design engineer. Of course, she’s still young…who knows what lies ahead for her…piloting and teaching could still happen.

hyperjulie, your little brother’s money-making scheme is hysterical! Reminds me of my brother. His boy scout troop used to have a monthly paper drive for recycling. Once someone turned in a stack of old playboy magazines. He snuck some home, tore out the pictures, and was selling them out of his tent at Boy Scout camp for a quarter each. When my dad (who was on the Troop Committee) found out, he got punished, of course, but years later Dad admitted he had to admire his sense of entrepreneurship!

Same little brother loved to play in the mud with tonka trucks. When he was 3 he wanted a tacka-woada-bako (tractor-loader-backhoe) for Christmas. Perhaps it was fate… he is now a supervisor for a construction company that installs water mains and sewer pipes.

What a fun thread! When S1 was in third grade, he had to make a poster which included, among other things, a picture of what he wanted to be when he grew up. (I still have the poster, of course.) The picture he cut out and carefully pasted on the poster is of Frank Thomas, an African-American baseball player for the Chicago White Sox. In his playing days Frank was listed at 6’5", 275 lbs. My son, who happens to be Caucasian, grew to be 5’6" and weighs about 120 lbs. He is finishing his 5th year in a Ph.D. program in political science and wants to teach International Relations/Security Issues on the college level. I love to drag out the poster and show it to him. It still makes him laugh. :)

D wanted to be a lawyer. Went to law school and didn’t like it, and is now entered a PhD program in History, though she plans to specialize in history of the law.

S wanted to be a doctor until the day he entered college and decided he didn’t ever want to take another bio course (a give-a-way, don’t ya think?) He took physics for his science requirements. He is entering a PhD program in Art History in the Fall to teach or curate.

As a toddler, S’s favorite book was a supermarket story where the little boy helps his mom count the 12 items or less. He was very enamored with the cleaning products being purchased, particularly the sponges. That led to obsessing over my colored kitchen sponges as well as having a great interest in mops, brooms, and brushes. We have a photo of him at age 2 “cleaning” our bathroom with a toilet brush! Thus, we thought he might end up being a janitor. When he was a little older, he wanted to be a lawyer, with the motive of eventually entering politics and running for President. He now works in investment banking.

D wanted to be a Nike-sponsored athlete, which she sort of is now at her Div. 1 school with Nike supplied team gear.
