She wanted to be a rock and roll guitarist since she was five. I took her to see Bizet’s Carmen at LA Opera when she was 12 and she decided that night that she wanted to sing opera. And now she actually supports herself doing just that. (and teaches voice as well)

BTW she can still wail on her Fender stratocaster.

Parent56 wrote “now me… i wanted to be a nun and have 7 kids!”

HA! When I was in 3rd grade (a million years ago) I wrote I wanted “to have 30 children” my teacher wrote on the paper (my mom framed it) “You don’t want to be a mother, you want to be a teacher!”

I am not a teacher, and I only had one child. Guess I smartened up.

I remember vividly wanting to be a paleontologist when I was little. Now I’m going to be a rising sophomore with a double major in Biology and English. Oh how the times change.

Sapling could recite the six motives for arson at four when he wanted to be a fireman. Then he decided to play for the White Sox, that was until he didn’t make the hs baseball team. He wanted to teach Latin until last year and is now interested in statistics and sports analysis.

D2 reminded me that when she was little she wanted to be an Olympic ice skater (kaboshed when her first ice skating teacher at age 5 was “mean”). Later she wanted to be a volcano expert (volcanologist). Don’t know what happened to that dream…

She’s majoring in neuroscience in college but has now expressed interest in becoming a symphony manager. So it looks like she is up for anything still…

D1’s secret dream, as she got older, was to become a party planner (not a caterer). She is actually quite good at it. I could see her quiting her finance job some day to do that.

My D1 always wanted to be a teacher. She has a BA in history with certification to teach adolescent ed and is almost done with her master’s in special education. Her dream is to someday have a doctorate in urban education and totally change the way poor and minority kids are educated.

My D2 wanted to be a chef and took classes at the Institute for Culinary Education in Manhattan for years. She is now in her third undergrad year double majoring in art conservation and art history, with minors in medieval studies and chemistry. She wants to be a conservator of medieval weaponry. But she makes some absolutely amazing desserts.

When we ask my son what he would like to be he just bats his eyelashes.

D1 loved the Emergency Vet shows on Discovery when she was in pre-school and swore she wanted to be a vet. By the time she turned 7-8, blood was gross, so she had no interest. Now, she just finished freshman year in Pre-Vet (she’s almost a Jr b/c of APs) and hopes to get a job at the vet’s office this summer.

S1 (HS’15) has recently declared interest in Engineering, which suits his strengths. A far better calling than ‘Chef’ which he declared when he was in early elementary school. We told him that could be a problem, as he eats no vegetables and a limited range of others foods.

My D always told everyone that she was going to be an OB/Gyn since she was 5 (our neighbor is one, so she knew that term). She was involved in music, singing and piano for fun, and had some great experiences along the way, but when you asked her what she wanted to do as she went through HS it was still a doctor, and ‘most likely an OB/Gyn.’

Now, 2 years after her 1-year of pre-med and a transfer to a music school, she just finished her junior year and is thoroughly enjoying her music major and is writing and performing. (And has an un-paid internship to boot … she realizes she won’t be rolling in the dough anytime soon.)

Dear S is just graduating HS and just wants to be an environmentalist. His ideal plan is to follow my D as she tours the world as a famous musician, but I’m not sure she supports that even if she does make it.

Oldest wanted to be an elementary teacher. Once she realized that her students would be forever correcting her terrible spelling, she decided to go with what she’s a whiz at and teaches high school math. She absolutely loves calculus. Her avocation is Christian Education with elementary and middle school kids which she does over the summers at camp. Don’t know how that will work now that she’s leaving WI for AK.

Younger kid wanted to be a proctologist 'cause she thought it was amazing that one can get paid for looking at people’s butts. On Monday she will start her cardiac rotation and her clinical year of Physician Assistant qualification. She didn’t choose proctology for her one elected specialty… her career will be in family medicine.

Haha-KKmama. Your daughter may still get an opportunity to look at people’s butts in family medicine. Somehow I imagine the appeal has lessened considerably. ;)

My son wanted to be a “puppetman” and a magician when he was young. He actually made good money in his middle school years putting on magic shows at kid’s birthday parties.
Now he’s working in Sacramento in the Governor’s office. We’re all counting on his magician skills coming in handy.

I wanted to be a lawyer and judge since forever. Then a writer. I still want to be a writer and still toy with the idea of going to law school, though I probably won’t since I can’t picture myself doing that for the rest of my life.
As of now, I’m double majoring in English and Economics, still have no clue what I’m going to do once I graduate.

My son wanted to be a gardner. We had a wonderful gardner (when he was 3 ish) who let me son use his bubble mower on the dement while they were trimming bushes. Now: he’s a show business agent.

Daughter 1 wanted to make movies. She is now…making movies.

Daughter 2 wanted to be an actress. She did work as an actress but decided against it. Now: recent graduate in public relations…She has been hired to be an assistant at a major event public relations company. They do, among many other things…Oscar parties.

S1 wanted to be GI Joe.
He’s now a Spec. Ops officer in the U.S. Navy

S2 wanted to be a cook/ restaurant owner.
He just graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice…maybe he sees some free donuts and coffee in his future. He still likes to cook.

Older s is a mechanical engineer. We found an autobiography he wrote when he was in 4th grade. In it he said he wanted to be… a mechanical engineer
