Whatcha Doin New Years....New Years Eve....!

^^^^I envy people with your kind of energy, @Marilyn.

Our last house guest leaves tomorrow after a visit of 10 days, so DH and I will be alone (and happy about that-which is no disrespect to our family member at all). We will have surf and turf, a bottle of wine, and just chill by a warm fire. We may watch a movie or one of the NYE shows. For once it is going to be very cold here, and I don’t mind at all.

Right now it looks like I’m:
a. Driving my 17 year old to and from her friend’s house. She has a car and is a fine driver. But there’s snow on the roads and I don’t trust the other drivers on New Year’s Eve. So I’m guessing she’ll object, but she doesn’t get the car tomorrow night.

b. Hosting a sleepover for some of my 14 year old’s friends.

I’m a teacher. For me, the start of a New Year is Labor Day. New Years is simply the end of Christmas to me.

Had my haircut and chatted with the designer about the new year party plans. She said one year she and her husband went to the Seattle Center to watch the fireworks and stood there for 2 hours… got so cold that decided to bail out! Make sure you wear warm layers even if you plan to be there for a short period of time!

Tomorrow is supposed to be single digits in Times Square. And you have to get there at something like 1 pm, to stand in a corral till after midnight… (People wear Depends, in case you’re wondering.)

Nope, no thanks.

The H of one of my best friends plays in a band, that band is playing at a local brew pub. So I guess we’ll head out to see that for a while, though my preference would be to get into my jammies and enjoy some prosecco quietly at my house…

Guess my New year’s resolution is to be a little more social in 2018…

Supposed to do the NYRR’s Midnight Run in Central Park but given the temps everyone is on the fence now. So only sure thing is a candlelight Yin Yoga class at 3 pm.

Hopefully everyone will rally and if it gets too cold we just head into the nearest place that will serve us a drink!

Going to the home of some friends for the Patriots’ game and staying for awhile. The husband owns a local restaurant that closes during the winter - he always fixes lots of good food! We are taking our ill son with us, so we will stay as long as he is comfortable with all the social interaction.

Our son is making a lavish late PM dinner for the three of us. I hate staying up late, but I make an exception on NYE, though I’m rarely awake at midnight.

We also have had company throughout the Christmas holiday. It’s cold and snowy. I thought about going to our favorite steakhouse but I’m glad that I didn’t make reservations. They are getting tons of lake effect, even more than us so we’ll stay home and relax.

We went XC skiing today and the roads were not good. And I’m no wimp about driving in the winter. Below zero temps and snow are not a good combo.

We’re starting with drinks and appetizers at a friend’s apartment in NYC, then going with the same friends to the Concert for Peace at St. John the Divine. After the concert, we’ll all head back to the suburbs and have a late dinner at our house and ring in the new year. They’ll sleep over and Monday we’ll have our annual New Year’s Day Football and Chili fest…we’ve been gathering with the same people since our kids, now in their 20s and 30s, were in elementary school. Not as fun since our teams (NU Wildcats, Wisconsin Badgers) no longer seem to play on New Year’s Day, but it’s gotten to the point where I no longer have to send invitations – everyone just assumes that this is where we’ll all be on the 1st!

Nothing special. H will cook a nice dinner and I will make dessert. We will have at least one kid here, maybe two. H and S2 have an early flight on Monday, so our celebration will be pretty sedate. The last few years I made cioppino, but this year we waited too late to buy the seafood. Some years we do a big NYE swim. I think we will get to do it this year. It takes place in the morning.

NY day S1 is having people over, old high school friends.

Houseful of people, skiing then dinner and a local ball drop and fireworks. Busy but fun to have a house full of young men and women.

Will babysit my 4 month old grandson while son and DIL go to a NYE party. This is their first time going out together without the baby in 4 months.

Flying home next week to warmer weather!!

We’ve been doing the same thing for 20 years. Our friends host a dinner party and then we usually go to the Delaware River for fire works. This year they purchased a new loft and it has a gorgeous view to center city from one window and another to the Ben Franklin bridge. We will be watching the fire works from the window this year. Philly is freezing right now. There was talk of postponing the Mummer’s parade, but they’ve decided to proceed.

Our daughters are having a bunch of friends over. New Years Eve is not huge because they are all out on 2 Street, which is where the Mummer’s “homes” are. The parade always ends up back on 2 street, so that is where they go.

We host a brunch on New Year’s day and then a crock pot of shredded pork with a side of broccoli rabe and roasted potatoes to make sandwiches. The Eagles are playing so people will be in and out all day.

LOLing about some of you mentioning sub zero temps after I said it will be “very cold” in Dallas. But Monday’s high is projected to be 28-that’s very very cold for Dallas!

D1 lived in Wyoming for 2 years while she worked on her Masters. One day I pulled up my weather app and it was -28 degrees in Laramie. I don’t see how that’s compatible with life, from the point of view of animal life. But even for humans, just hard to conceive. She told me that once it gets below 10 degrees, it all seems about the same. She is finishing her Ph.D in NC, so she really appreciates the more temperate climate. At the same time, they have four seasons there, unlike Texas, which is “summer, summer, still summer, and Christmas.”

Tomorrow, H will be smoking a turkey we are taking to my brother’s NY day lunch with the extended family. NYE we will go to H’s oldest friend’s house to see all H’s old buddies and enjoy delicious foods and fun company and perhaps see and pop fireworks.

D is still with us and loves the food and seeing H’s buddies and their kids and now grandkids. She may ditch us at some point for a quieter gathering of her friends (which she has done in prior years).

My plan was to have lobster tails tomorrow, but we have so many leftovers from family lunch today that we will likely save the lobster until the 1st. If all goes as usual, we will be asleep before 12.
My younger son is headed into D.C., so I’m a little nervous, but he’s 21, very responsible, and will be using Metro and Uber if necessary, so I’m trying not to worry. The kids know I will pay whatever is necessary for them to be safe, so to take a cab instead of walking around very late in an unfamiliar place, for example.

D2 left today to go back to Boston after a weeks visit. D1 left Tues.,back to NYC, after a 5 day visit. Had all three overlapping for 4 days. Plus we had our grand-cat who does not get along with our 15 yr old cat. Also, D1 and her partner decided to redo her old bedroom to make it a guest room as a present to H and I.

This involved removing furniture, going through a lot of old stuff from her childhood and deciding what to keep, toss or donate. Also involved was cleaning, spackling , painting and then three trips to the dump and Salvation Army. It was completely overwhelming. D1 and her partner had to sleep on a queen aero bed in the middle of the family room. And of course there were a lot of presents stacked here and there everywhere.

So of course having a houseful of people sleeping everywhere, keeping cats away from each other and just dealing with usual Christmas stuff made this stressful and off-putting. But I loved having everyone here and so glad to have the room, basically, done. Plus a fun Christmas Day with good food, drink, games and company.

But now a low keyed NYE is needed. H, S and I will go out to dinner and come home and try to stay up until the ball drops.

Happy New Year everyone!

Usually enjoy a quiet, family at home NYE, but this year, DD and her fiance surprised us with tickets for the 4 of us to attend a 10 pm symphony performance together. While it will be bitterly cold in the city, we are sure to have a good time.

Happy New Year!

Out for an early dinner with D2 on NYE, home for Netflix. We don’t like to drive on NYE due to safety.

A friend of mine is having an open house on NY day, and I will be going to that for a few hours. D2 has quals exams to study for the day she gets back to grad school, so she will stay home.
