We’re going to our vacation home on Monday–most of the weekend will be over, but we’ll be staying there for two weeks. My daughter and her husband are already there and this is the first time we’ve seen them since January. Looking forward to the beach and biking on the bike paths.
Yesterday I babysat my granddaughter. Her other grandma is the main babysitter, but she went away for the weekend so I went down for the day. Granddaughter is 15 months and so much fun! This morning I played tennis early this morning but it is going to be extremely hot so I will likely hibernate the rest of the weekend and watch the US Open on TV.
Today, wife and Iwent to the Antietam battlefield and strung together a roughly 7 mile hike across a couple of trails and the park road.
Dinner was subs from one of our great local places washed down with beer bought at another local place.
Tomorrow will be chores and we will walk the long way to our neighborhood Mexican place for dinner.
Monday will hopefully be some more hiking
I didn’t have any plans but my daughter came by and said she was on her way to the flea market that is only open on the first weekend of the month. So my son who lives with us and I and daughter donned our masks and went antiquing. Everyone was masked and social distancing at the flea market. Nice outing with my kids. And I got a few treasures.
I don’t feel like it was that risky. It’s not like we bellied up to the bar or sang 4 part harmony or spent an hour talking over an indoor dinner. I could be tragically wrong. But it didn’t feel more dangerous than going to the supermarket. Fingers crossed.
Today I’m listening to a church service online where my oldest is giving the sermon (third week in a row - very interesting topic, mom bias aside).
Then I’m heading out to mow a field - again - long hours with just the lawnmower and me watching nature. Sometimes I look forward to this as it’s a nice break when my mind can just wander. Today (and tomorrow) it’s more of a chore and I’ll be reminding myself that weed control is worth the time spent (natural, vs chemicals).
Who knows though…when I’m out there my mind might get a fun topic to contemplate or nature might prove interesting.
This is my weekend to catch up on yard work. It’s been unseasonably hot in August so I’ve been procrastinating. Need to dig out a dead juniper in the front yard; collect and saw into smaller pieces the cottonwood limbs to got blown down in a windstorm earlier in the week; mow, rake, edge & fertilizer the backyard grass. I also need to scrub out the catboxes.
I also have several quilting projects I’m working on and I need to make and can marinara from all my excess garden tomatoes before they spoil.
Will videochat with daughters who both live OOS. (Have to get a belly report from D1 who is now into her 3rd trimester with twins. She’s HUGE!)
Yesterday ended up having my mom come down and spend the day with us at our house. She lives about 45 minutes away so I picked her up early and then H took her home after dinner. First time she has been out of her town since probably February. S and his wife came over for a cookout.
This morning I took a 6 mile walk and then baked a blueberry coffee cake I’ve had in my mind to make all week. Enjoying it now out on the deck on a breezy 75 degree day. Splitting the rest of the day between at home tasks and reading a book I’ve been on hold for on Libby for two months!
We’re having a heat wave (not too bad by the coast, really just a summer day) so I’m either in the pool or indoors with AC. Friday night I pulled out the 19 year old DVD from our son’s Bar Mitzvah - my favorite part was the huge hug he gave me when it ended. Since we haven’t seen him since Thanksgiving and likely won’t until next year, it was bittersweet.
Yesterday morning I colored my hair again, and on Tuesday I’m getting it cut; first appointment of the day. I always try to get it looking good in September, both for the High Holidays and because it’s my birthday month. We also decided to attempt our first dining out to celebrate that birthday mid-month, assuming we can get a fairly isolated outside table.
Last night I watched “All That Jazz” recorded earlier in the week. I’ve seen it before but had a new perspective after watching Fosse/Verdon last year.
Tomorrow afternoon we will go pick up our prayer books outside the synagogue and visit the ice cream truck they set up for Shofar Shofun. Then maybe walk around Balboa Park a little if it’s not too crowded.
And I continue to be intensely thankful that we moved here.
@Marilyn it’s hot at my house near the coast with no air conditioning. We walked 6 miles early this morning and there wasn’t much of a breeze even along the shore. A fire is burning east of San Diego and it is up to 4,000 acres burned with no containment. There was ash on our cars this morning and we can smell the smoke.
Tomorrow we will bring all the house plants and hanging baskets inside, cover all the other plants we can with blankets, and hunker down for the one day cold blast we are expecting on Tuesday. Yesterday it was 101 degrees, today ~99, and the high on Tuesday is expected to be 40, with a low of 30. Have to unhook the hoses too.
Wow, it’s hot here on the San Diego Coast today. We will probably have rolling SDGE blackouts. Might have to find a close friend that has AC:). We have a nice pool so I’m getting a lot of calls from people that want to drop by for a swim. Beach out front is already packed to the gills.
@twoinanddone that state are you located??? OMG, no to having to cover plants already!!!
Denver CO. The heat has been coming from California, and it’s been record hot (above 90 for a skillion days this summer, the entire state is in drought conditions), but the cold is coming from Canada, and only for Tuesday. By Wednesday and Thursday, back to the 80s. I don’t think all of Colorado will be hit, just Denver and the front range. I don’t think Colorado Springs will be too cold.
The weather map is very strange, but we have a fire in part of this area and hoping the cold (and snow) will help.
I had a nice visit with my sister-in-law at a rooftop bar yesterday, except for the fact there was a father and a young kid who kept on coming by our table to look at the scenery. Every time they came by, we put on our masks. At one point, the father told the kid to scream on top of her lungs about being “the greatest kid in the world,” that was when I told the father to move and put his mask on. Sheesh!
It was a beautiful evening and we saw many people on rooftops socializing. Most of them seemed to stay within their pods and were not too crowded. My own apartment building have strict protocol on using our courtyard.
Another quiet weekend in self imposed quarantine, but my neighbor spontaneously organized an outdoor socially distanced happy hour, which was fun!
@coralbrook - you’re lucky you did your outdoor bubble evening yesterday. At least it’s not humid! I’ve alternated between staying inside in the AC, and half an hour of slow laps in the pool. No one has called to come over.
@showmom858 - as I was heading back inside, a tiny tip of an ashy leaf floated down in front of me. So I guess we’re getting ash from the fire (27 miles away) here in Point Loma.
Quiet weekend. Saturday morning went to a local farmer’s market which was the most crowded it’s been all summer. Boo hiss, but they have the best heirloom tomatoes and mozarella.
I spent much of the rest of the day finishing up several sketches of ideas for layouts for a basement of a house. (They want to increase ceiling height and add access to a new pool, put in shower, sauna, wine cellar, and sound studio.) Heard today the clients liked all of our ideas. Yay!
Finished up by transcribing the last of the letters in German from a collection from my Great Aunt who was in Munich from late 1929 through 1931 where her husband was studying at the university. The German handwriting is very hard to read - they have some interesting conventions like putting a straightline over m’s and n’s instead of doubling them, and because m’s, n’s and u’s all look so alike, they used ŭ over plain u’s and ü for the umlaut. Until I caught on and did a little research on old German handwriting conventions I was seriously confused! Most of the letters are quite boring, but every once in a while, some one mentions their worries about the political or economic situation. Anyway, it’s been an interesting little project.
Today we went for a four mile walk and then I did 20 minutes or so of arm and core work in the basement gym. Meanwhile dh has been smoking a duck for dinner. We spent a couple of hours on Discord and Tabletop playing a game with the kids, SIL, BIL and one nephew.
No special plans for tomorrow, though I am hoping to snag my kids for a game of Dominion.
I’m sure I don’t live in the same state as @twoinanddone. but we’re expecting a high of 56 on Wednesday with snow at altitudes above 6500 ft Wednesday night. Right now it’s 98 degrees. My house is right around 6500 ft so I’ll be picking all my green tomatoes tomorrow.
We’ve had a quiet weekend, we cleaned the apartment yesterday and ran a few errands today.
We also slept late this morning and missed church. (oh well. H is an almost retired pastor, it is good for him to have the choice to miss).
We both have to work tomorrow and are grateful to have paid employment on Labor Day.
There is a traditional Labor Day run/walk event in our town every year. Of course, it is canceled this year due to COVID, but our walking group will meet in the morning and walk the general course. You could sign up for it as a virtual event and still contribute to the charity it supports. We also had a couple of small drinks on the deck meet ups this weekend.
