In terms of curriculum and typical proficiency, how many years of US high school French is a Canadian Grade 9 French credit equivalent to? Is there any official comparison that can be referenced? Since Ontario students have taken French since Grade 4 (at a minimum), I’m assuming that by the end of Grade 9 they are well ahead of the proficiency of an American ninth grader with a year of French (or possibly 3 if they had junior high language opportunities).
I agree with you, but I don’t think US universities agree with us. It’s best to have at least 3 years of high school French. imo (as well as 4 years social studies, math and science).
I would make no such assumption. It depends on the US student’s pre-9th grade preparation.
I would suggest the following Canadian to US equivalencies:
Core French 9 = French II
Extended French 9 = French III
French Immersion 9 = French IV+
Thanks, that’s about what I was thinking too, skieurope. While it might be “best” to have 3 years of high school French that is not going to happen, lol. The US schools my Canadian son is interested in say he needs to have a language at a Grade 10 level, rather than actually two high school credits. He has one French high school credit and one Latin credit, and really does not want to take any language ever again! The textbooks they used for Grade 9 French were Discovering French Blanc, which is designated “Level 2” - but I haven’t been able to find a place that specifically assigns it a typical grade level.
