What's Your FAFSA Status?

We submitted on 1/6/24. Still “in review”.

Same “in review” for both students, after submitting 1/14/24.

We’re still ‘In Review’ from submitting 1/2/24

Submitted 1-1-24 and still “in review.”

It’s possible that you were affected by an issue with asset consideration. For some, assets were incorrectly ignored when an initial SAI was calculated. That was corrected in the final processing.

**Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation omitting reported assets for families whose combined AGI exceeds the threshold that requires them to report assets on the FAFSA form, but as individual tax filers their AGIs are below the threshold. For independent students, this includes scenarios where both the student and their spouse are required contributors who must provide information on the form, and their assets are greater than $0. For dependent students, this includes scenarios where both parents (i.e., parent and parent spouse) are required contributors who must provide information on the form, and their assets are greater than $0.

This has been corrected as applications are processed and the estimated SAI on the FAFSA Submission Summary will correctly consider any required reported assets, as well as the effects of the updating of the SAI tables for inflation announced in GENERAL-24-06. However, the Department is still working to adjust the initial estimated SAI that is provided to students upon completion of the form, prior to processing. There is no estimated timeline for completion. Students impacted by this issue will potentially see a discrepancy in their initial SAI upon completion of the FAFSA form versus what their SAI calculation reflects after their form is processed.**

What’s going to happen with the people who checked they do qualify for free&reduced lunch simply because their school offers it to all students/doesn’t do need based testing but who don’t have enough need to technically qualify? Many people filled out FAFSA before the form’s question clarified that. Will the schools have to look out for that and process a correction?

One scenario would be that the families who, for a variety of reasons, checked yes to the free lunch question will have income included in the SAI but not assets (since they were never asked). With the time crunch and all the different issues, there is a good chance they get a free pass for the 2024-25 year.
Now it is a good question whether this will land on the colleges to question. That could create a wide swath of different results.

Still in review, submitted on 1/4. However, last update date became 3/5??? We did not make any updates!

Still in review. Submitted 1/3. But every time I log in to check it claims it’s been updated even though all it has me do is confirm my cell phone number is correct.

Mine is In Review, submitted 1/2 - BUT it did stop asking me to verify my cell/contact info in the last two logins, so I am hoping it means SOMETHING is moving forth behind the scenes and at minimum, am no longer annoyed by that screen.

Submitted 1/6. Still in review.

It happened with my log in yesterday. But today it requires 2 steps verification again.

Yes, I just check the status and now last update became 3/13

Also happens for me.

I’m guessing that nothing will happen this year, due to the time crunch. However, it’s possible that verification selection may come into play if they check income against the free/reduced lunch question. No way to know yet. It was a huge oversight on the part of the team setting up the FAFSA, but if it doesn’t result in an increase in Pell eligibility for those who would otherwise not be Pell eligible, I’m not sure it will be considered an issue. Schools could decide to look at it, but again, how much will aid be affected? If a school doesn’t have a lot of grant aid to offer, they aren’t going to want to waste time trying to figure out whether someone actually met the criteria for free/reduced lunch based on income. If they do think it’s important, they can kick it out for further review based on income information.

My spouse, DS24, and I all created independent FAFSA logins and submitted our information. Only my spouse and I can login to our accounts now.

Several weeks ago, DS24 could login but got an error message after he logged in that suggested trying again later.

Today, he tried logging in and the bar “Sign in Unsuccessful” appeared. He tried resetting his password per the instructions but then an “Account Not Found” red box appeared. This was not showing when he created his account and was able to login initially.

Is this how they communicate that an applicant does not qualify?

We have tried the contact us button but have heard nothing. We are assuming no aid but filled it because we were all getting constant emails from colleges he applied to asking us to fill it out.

No.

Did you try this widget located at the southeast corner of the student aid front page?

Even if you don’t qualify for a Pell Grant, all prospective first year students who file FAFSA qualify for the $5.5K direct federal student loan.

Does he have any emails from FSA with a link that he might click to his account? Did he receive an email that FAFSA had been filed and review is in process? I would also try the widget as suggested above. Does your S have a HS counselor that can help?

It says he has to login to use that feature.

I’m going to try to recreate the login with him when he gets home.

Spouse says that he can see an update on fafsa and that it is ready to be sent to colleges.

I am communicating with them both over text today.
