What's Your FAFSA Status?

Same with our first offer on Friday from an early action FAFSA only school saying our form is being reprocessed (U San Fran too), but FAFSA site doesn’t indicate anything new is happening to our already “processed” form. Ugh. We only have estimated offers from other schools so far. So glad we did this all last year for our son and have a slight understanding of it all. Running out of time.

Some FAFSAs are being reprocessed due to issues on the processor’s side. It may or may not impact your aid. You won’t be notified by FSA if your FAFSA is being reprocessed, but because the school said that it’s being reprocessed, it is. Your student will probably get an email from FSA/Department of Education if the SAI changes due to reprocessing (no guarantees on that).

Thank you! So it shouldn’t hold up the other schools? They can still work with the “processed” FAFSA as is, right?

They can, but some schools are choosing to wait until all reprocessing is complete. Some of the reprocessing isn’t expected to be sent to schools until May 1. Each school is handling this as best they can given staffing and computer resources. You can reach out to schools to ask about timing. This is an extraordinary year, and it’s unfortunate that final offers will not be available for some students until mid May, but schools are doing the best they can given the circumstances.

We’ll see what happens this week…

Just heard from a school saying they anticipate letter will start going out the week of April 29.

And that they’ve extended the deposit deadlines to May 15.

Yeah I hope so.

It’ll be over soon either way.

Update on this… The FAFSA fiasco continues.

04/19/2024 S24 got a notice from FAFSA that his submission was incomplete.
04/19/2024 1 of the schools sent an email indicating that they received his FAFSA, but “it’s currently rejected by the Federal processor.”

To be clear, he did digitally sign and then it was sent to me to digitally sign again.

04/20/24 S24 tried to digitally sign, but FAFSA was glitching and couldn’t get to the page to provide signature.
04/21/24 S24 was able to go directly to the signature page to sign. This time it did not go to me to re-sign.

I hoping this time it works.

Hi,
We did FASFA signature correction by kid on April 11th & added schools on April 14th. Today we saw in one her college document library says rejected by California department of education. My kid didn’t get any email? what is that mean? College is seeing before we updated the correction.Thank you.

If there is a missing signature, the FAFSA is considered to be rejected. If the school or organization initially received the FAFSA before the signature was added (or after the signature was added but before it was processed - it takes a couple days to process), the FAFSA could have been entered into their system as rejected. Once the signature was accepted, the new FAFSA would be transmitted to the school or organization - but they might not download the new one right away. It’s a good idea to call to see if they have the newest transaction with the signature. Call the California department of education to make sure they got the “good” FAFSA, since you don’t want to miss out on any possible grant money.

I just got an email from FSA today telling me they requested my tax info from the IRS.

Didn’t they do that in January? The FAFSA self-completed with info from the IRS. Why am I getting this now?

“Based on your consent for the use and disclosure of federal tax information, the U.S. Department of Education’s office of Federal Student Aid requested your 2022 federal tax information from the IRS. Watch for additional notifications from FAFSA® regarding the processing of the application.”

I’m hoping it’s just a delayed notification. Does it mean I’m getting audited or something? That’s fine. I didn’t lie about anything. Just hope it wouldn’t impact my SIA. We’re Pell eligible but barely. And one of our best offers has a lot of institutional money connected to that eligibility.

I got a similar notification at some point a while ago. My D’s financial aid checklist is complete on the school website (according to her) and the FAFsa shows as processed - so I’m assuming it’s just a late notification

There was an error on the IRS side (they sent information from the wrong line of the tax return or didn’t send data that they should have) for some people. People affected had their FAFSA automatically reprocessed, and because it had to pull IRS information again, they had to notify you. Your SAI will most likely change as a result.

You’re not being audited. See my post above - it’s fixing an error made by the IRS when they initially sent information to the FAFSA.

That sucks. If I lose the Pell I lose big $$ at one of the schools we might be able to afford.

If I have an offer letter from a school and commit, and the SAI changes tomorrow, would the school honor the agreement or change it based on new info?

I can’t say what effect it might have for your specific situation. I think it would be wise if you contact the school & ask to speak with a financial aid officer regarding your situation.

Gosh all that worrying and… It went DOWN. By a grand total of 21.

I look forward to seeing this reflected in my aid package. I want my $21!

Just kidding. Can you imagine calling up and demanding that? With everything going on in those offices this year?

I bet you $21 someone will do it, though.

It’s great that the change resulted in an increase! If it puts you into a different level for Pell, you’ll definitely receive an adjusted award letter reflecting the change. If the Pell stays the same, your awards will most likely not change (unless you are at a school that meets 100% need) … although you may receive an adjusted award letter reflecting the new SAI.

I think we’re good. The new FAFSA reports Pell at same number. Which is fine. I was mostly afraid the SAI would DOUBLE. It had gotten cut in half between the first FAFSA calculation and the later one. I was worried the second one was an error and we’d balloon back to the original.

FWIW none of the schools we are considering guarantee full need. But a few got us near or even below that level based on some mix of need, merit, fit and pity.

So we’re keeping our traps shut.

Ours went down $1,200 overnight after the reprocessing email (I checked at 11 p.m. and it was still reprocessing). The weird thing is that it is still almost 13K less than last year with higher income. Go figure.
