What's your favorite Christmas movie?

I wish the film of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” that we used to watch on video was available on DVD.

When I was a pre-teen, we used to play that opera on the hi fi at home, and my sister and I would sing along with it.

My absolute favorite is Elf and my husband’s favorite is Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas.

Nightmare Before Christmas, A Christmas Story, Love Actually and Scrooged.

I must admit, I do love Bad Santa as well. ;)

And The Nightmare Before Christmas! I always like to watch it during Halloween time so I forget it by the time Christmas rolls around. I need to watch it soon.

UCLA Band Mom: Please read my pm! Hooray for Santy Claus!

UCLA Band Mom we’re the same, but I forgot to put Elf in there.
Nrdsb4 Joyeux Noel was very good. Thanks for the reminder as I will seek to find it.

"The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I know it has nothing to do with Christmas per se, but for three years it defined the Christmas season as much as the trees and shopping mall Santas.

I miss that."

Marian: This is completely true for me as well. Every year the DVDs came out right before Christmas and my daughter and I would watch the extended versions and ALL of the extras.

There was an interesting documentary on TCM last night about Christmas films. Fun fact: the actress who played Zuzu in IAWL also played the little girl in The Bishop’s Wife. I’ve seen both films many times and never realized it (and I call myself a movie buff - hah). How’d you like to have her memories - playing scenes with Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant?

The documentary made me realize that there’s not an overabundance of good Christmas movies. It spent a little time on Christmas slasher films, which is a genre I think I’ll continue to live without. It also reminded me about another very good Barbara Stanwyck film with a Christmas theme that I don’t think has been mentioned here yet - Remember the Night. It’s essentially a comedy but there’s real sadness too, and Stanwyck is brilliant at both.

The TCM documentary will be on a few more times this month - 12/18 at noon and 12/20 at 10 PM. TCM is showing movies with Christmas themes on Tuesday evenings all month. TCM is one of my favorite things. :)

I love A Christmas Carol. the one with patrick Stewart

That was the original fascinator per wiki:

and Merriam-Webster:

But I swear it’s bubblewrap! This is a running joke between myself and my brother. Last Christmas he showed up at the door with a triangle of bubble warp around his head. He looked FABULOUS.

Although, not exactly “Christmas”, but rather “New Year” movie"
When Harry met Sally
Unfortunately, they stopped running it. I can watch it over every time it is on. And other old Meg Ryan’s movies. It has been pretty stupid on TV lately, absolutely nothing to watch.

Joyeux Noel was very good. Thanks for the reminder as I will seek to find it.

We watched that streaming on Netflix last year. :)

Another favorite
[A Christmas Memory (TV 1997) - IMDb](A Christmas Memory (TV Movie 1997) - IMDb)

A Christmas Story is my favorite though I have become really fond of The Family Stone. If I were going to break it down to a favorite moment from a Christmas movie it would have to be in Miracle on 34th Street when Kris Kringle sings to the little dutch girl in her native language. I tear up every. single. time.

I forgot to add Scrooge (1970/Albert Finney won a golden globe for his portrayal). Outstanding.

I agree that there are not enough good Christmas movies.

Did anyone ever see (maybe on late night TV, as I did) an old 1969 movie with Shirley Jones and Lloyd Bridges called “Silent Night, Lonely Night”? I remember loving it!

The Bells of St. Mary’s
Miracle on 34th Street
Charlie Brown’s Christmas
The Year Without a Santa Claus

I like the Doctor Who Christmas specials best! And if you think there aren’t enough good Xmas movies, try finding a good Chanukah movie! Although Chanukah isn’t a major holiday anyway so no big deal and no fair counting Adam Sandler or the Rugrats. Adding insult to injury.

That being said, I can turn on “It’s a Wonderful Life” right when everyone piles into George’s home to throw money on the table and sure enough I start the tears. “To George Bailey - the richest man in town.”

Home Alone
Home Alone 2

Die Hard

The best Jimmy Stewart Christmas movie; The Shop Around the Corner

If you’re a tad tired of “It’s a Wonderful Life” I recommend the Preston Sturges movie “Remember the Night” with Barbra Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray. It’s funny, quirky and yes . . . heartwarming.
