DS is studying abroad; vegetarian DD is working nearby; fiancé’s kids aren’t ready for a blended family dinner. I see some fish tacos in my future! What does everyone else have planned?
2 of our 4 kids are out of state and won’t be here for Thanksgiving. However, they are both flying here in 2 weeks, so we will do some sort of early celebration. We will still have a decent sized crowd on TG with DD1, SIL and grandbaby, DS2 and possibly his girlfriend who will be here from college, my Mom, and my brother and his crowd of possibly up to 7. I am going to keep it very simple as we are just finishing up a major re-model and will not have everything completely back together yet. My brother usually barbecues the turkey and brings it which is a huge load off of my plate and it is always delicious!
We always do TG at our house as we have a lot of room. In the past we have had 25-30 every year and it is always a lot of fun but a lot of work. I would be thrilled if someone else would host it this year as work is crazy, our house re-model was crazy, and I’m generally kind of tired. I am going to be looking for a lot of shortcuts this year!!! Fish tacos are sounding pretty good right now!
DS#1 and wife are hosting at their house across country. Flights are booked!
takeitallin – that sounds like a pretty big crowd and lots of fun! A cute little grandbaby is pretty sweet too!
jym626 – how grown up to be invited by your adult child and spouse! I look forward to that happening at some point with my kids.
S1 and DIL will be purposely vacationing. They live cross-country and will already be coming east for Christmas and New Year’s so they opted to be out of the country for Thanksgiving rather than celebrating it alone.
S2 will be here and we just invited my nephew who was going to be alone for the holiday. We’ll have the traditional, for us, Thanksgiving meal, but I’m sure I’'ll throw in a twist or two.
Oldest and youngest will be at our house. Middle kid will be in Beirut at school - no holiday for him! I’ll probably go all out and make a big Thanksgiving dinner (not my talent, but I’ll survive).
We have commonly had 20 or so people here for Thanksgiving, but when we don’t host… how come we don’t get 10-20 invitations elsewhere?
D will be here that entire week-first time home from college! H smokes our turkey, and though it’s delicious, I do miss a nice, crispy-skinned oven-roasted one. But it saves me a ton of work. H’s extended family will all be here, along with my two older kids. The one who works in a restaurant will even be there since they close on Thanksgiving. I am in charge of stuffing and pies, everyone else brings a dish so no one person has too much to do. It’s taken some getting used to, but I’ve adapted.
@Classof2015 my parents, even with 5 kids, once had a TDay like you’re anticipating. They went to Burger King because everyone else was closed. The next year two SIL’s won free turkeys at work, after my mom had already purchased hers. There was a lot of Thanksgiving food around the house for a very, very long time.
jym626 – so true! I’d think you’d get at least 1-2 invites!
sseamom – haha – we may find ourselves at the BK lounge too!
It will be my D’s first time home from college too. She’s inviting a French exchange student home for Thanksgiving so will be having a traditional Thanksgiving meal and showing off the Texas hill country.
News flash – DD said I can make TG dinner for her and her roommates! All of whom are from out of town and can’t afford to go home! I’m much happier cooking for more people than less. This could be fun after all.
My sister hosts Thanksgiving. Just our parents, our siblings, spouses, children and grandchildren. Over 30 people. I get to host Christmas. We all contribute and I love every minute of it.
Two of my kids live locally so easy for them. Third will fly in for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. One of my sisters coming from Texas with her family. Two other siblings live locally as do most of their kids. Ones who don’t will fly in. Family is big with us.
MIL hosts turkey day. Both kids live/go to school near them. Dinner can be us plus them and any number of H’s siblings and their families. MIL makes an awesome meal. We bring wine and sparkling cider. I’ve wondered for a while how many more years she’ll want to do this but I am always thankful for the current one.
Crossing fingers all 3 kids will be home this year. Two work and have to travel to be here and the third will have his first visit home since starting college. I host extended family too, and am celebrating my 20th year of putting on the feast for our crowd. I’ll add that since two kids became vegetarians several years ago, we also have pasta (which I secretly prefer over turkey!).
Thanksgiving is always at our house and H is the chief cook. We have friends who have attended for years. S will be coming home from London ( not a holiday at his school, I know) and will help H as D, SIL and I will run the turkey trot in the AM.
Hey, Class - good to see you! Looks like congratulations are in order too!!!
Debating whether we should schlep to cousin’s in CT or just stay home and invite friends. S will go to either as it’s same distance to CT as it is to us.
With all our family scattered all over the country, and with our S likely staying at school (he has classes the day before) he usually doesn’t want to come home, even though he is just in Boston, for those few days (plus he likely has one of more love interests around, too:). So it usually is my wife and I and our menagerie, other than the lovebird (she likes it if we have seed covered bread, but that is about it), the parrot, the dogs and the cat love Thanksgiving food, so that is our celebration. To be honest, after all those years growing up with family thanksgivings, it is kind of nice to have our own like this, though we would love to have our son at home.
At the moment I have no idea, since I don’t know what S and his GF plan to do. It might well depend whether she can get the necessary days off, since she recently started a new job and they are both reporters. Someone has to staff the paper! So we might stay here, or we might go down to CT to be with my family.
I’m sure her family would also like them to come, but I don’t think they can really afford the airfare. We shall see.
Another alternative is that they and her parents could all come here, since we have the room. (S and GF live about 2 1/2 hrs drive from here.) That would be fun. On the other hand, they’ve only recently moved in together and are not, AFAIK, engaged, so that might be putting too much pressure on the situation. Ya think? :))
My daughter and son in law go out of town that week for a vacation before she has to gear up for Advent and Christmas (Priest). My husband and I usually go to a friend’s house and bring a pie that my husband bakes. This year we are going to Santa Fe with my daughter/son in law and I’m looking forward to it. My son was invited, too, but flights are complicated and expensive so he’s going to stay put. I hope he gets invited somewhere. We’ll probably have good Mexican food for dinner!
Hoping our nomadic kiddo comes home, finally!
