Nasty political humor is not new. It just isn’t. We can wish it wasn’t that way now or then but we also need to be cognizant of free speech and too much censoring. That becomes a slippery slope as well.
I do think it is appropriate to draw lines between vulgarity and racism.
I can agree with that unless the “horrible words” are condemnations of actions and words vs. things out of one’s control-race-or things completely unrelated to the content of the discussion. For example, if one is stating that Sarah Sanders is lying, therefore making her a “liar,” I find that far different than calling her names for her weight when the subject at hand was her veracity.
@eyemamom that’s not true. Joy Behar did not do that. She equated literally hearing voices to what most people consider to be mental illness. Literal hearing voices. Not religion. Not guidance or inspiration or faith.
Michelle Wolfe did not use horrible words to describe Sarah Sanders. That’s another myth. Nothing vulgar or crass.
I believe in free speech. I don’t want anyone censored. However, I don’t think it is helpful on either side when we name call or get really nasty, or personal. I don’t think it is helpful for the greater good. My opinion is that it makes people dig in their heels on both sides and takes us another step away from working together.
@bhs1978 I understand that but I can’t think of which men have lost their jobs for similar behavior. I remember growing up and Andrew Dice Clay was pretty popular and I’m pretty sure was also vulgar, crass and offensive.
Big Samantha Bee fan. I really, really dislike Ivanka Trump.
Yes, Bee crossed a line – it’s MY line, so YMMV. But I was offended and disappointed by what she said on many levels.
Will I boycott Bee? No, I think one vulgar-over-the-top-and-unfunny line won’t negate the years that I enjoyed her. Hopefully, such a lapse in taste and judgment won’t happen again. If it does, I may re-evaluate, but as of right now I will continue watching.
Kathy Griffin lost her job for a decapitation picture.
Both she and Roseanne really crossed lines with their audiences. And they were already down with several strikes against them.
I’m predicting Samantha will stick around for a bit for now. Terrible language and a personal rant–she could have easily made her point and reached a wider audience by doing what she does best–comedy and satire but didn’t bother with the effort.
@gouf78 she was trying to mock the bleeding from the eyes, blood coming from everywhere comment (paraphrasing as I don’t remember the exact words) made about Megyn Kelly, actually. That’s why the eyes were bleeding.
Quick search found:
Gilbert Gottfried fired from AFLAC
Norm MacDonald fired from SNL
George Carlin sued for performing “Seven Dirty Words”
Lenny Bruce blacklisted.
I honestly don’t care which way we go, I just want consistency. I guess I lean toward Let comedians perform what they want and the viewership will decide their fate. Or we censor comedians but who gets to draw the line. It’s obvious from this thread that the line is different.
The different line is what, in my opinion, causes the double standard.
I really think sexism and racism should be treated alike when it comes to offensiveness. Demeaning a woman due to her sex is just as wrong as demeaning a black person due to his race. Those who say Samantha Bee’s comments were just terrible language are overlooking the sexism. Vulgar words to describe a woman are sexist just as offensive words used to describe black people are racist.
I also think the context of the photo of Ivanka Trump was bothersome. If she had been in a hardhat building a wall on the border, I could have said ok, well, political difference. But holding her baby and saying that is icky.
I am amused in a twisted way about the mothers on Twitter who have appropriated the phrase for themselves as they go about their own activities of motherhood.
@gouf78 well, people can look it up to see other perspectives and decide for themselves.
I wasn’t a fan of the photo regardless of what she was trying to depict, but it didn’t deserve death threats to her and her mom, let alone hounding by the secret service.
Back to the double standard that politicians seem to be allowed to repeatedly say shocking things and their supporters believe every “clarification”. But not so entertainers.
