When "Comedy" is Not

What do you expect from a show called “Full Frontal”? Samantha Bee is known for her raunchy comedy. After she was called a thunder[c-word] she had women’s t-shirts printed up with the phrase and she presented Jake Tapper with the Full Frontal Thunder #%^& award for his political coverage.

I’m not a fan of the c word, but then again I’m not wild about the kitty-cat p word either.

@Sue22 that is a good point that this is what she is paid for. Expecting different would be like expecting someone like Howard Stern to be G rated.

My point is “wrong is wrong”
Roseanne Was wrong
Samantha Bee was wrong
Certain politicians are wrong

We either have to accept that all of these things are wrong or they’re not. People today are qualifying the wrong based on their ideology.

Honestly I believe our society is going in the wrong direction. Why can’t we just respect all people even if we disagree with them.

I’m qualifying Roseanne’s wrong as being racist. She’s made plenty of crude, vulgar comments before. I’ve never found her funny, never liked her shows but I don’t expect her to get shut down for making vulgar comments.

To me, there is a difference. There is a spectrum on the wrongness scale. It’s not all the same. I don’t like either Roseanne’s or Bee’s humor but I don’t have to watch it either. I still put racist comments in another, more abhorrent category.

@bhs1978 I do see your point. I don’t disagree with it.

I’m going to ignore the vulgarity (I hate it!) but I think one major issue is that the show is billed as comedic–and what she did wasn’t funny, it wasn’t parody, it wasn’t satire…it was a full blown attack on a specific person and a personal rant with a huge stage. That’s not entertainment–it’s a personal soap box. (Roseanne was only a “tweet”–not on the show at least–don’t condone that either).

If Samantha wants to personally rant–get a blog like everyone else–heck go to FB and post. If someone wants to hear it, they’ll friend her.

Hard to believe this started because Ivanka tweeted a sweet pix of her with her kid.

Some of you think it’s okay–what if Ivanka was a different race–then would it be deemed racist rather than a poor choice of words?

The words used weren’t racist, so they wouldn’t have been deemed racist is she was not white.

Exactly. And many people who are completely outraged about comments made by entertainers become completely mute when similar or worse comments are made by politicians whom they support. Lest a mod think I’m being political, I’m absolutely not, because I see this behavior in many people of all political persuasions.

I’m not being deliberately obtuse or arguing against moderation when I say I really don’t understand these rules. It’s very hard for me to understand where the line is so that I can stay well on the other side of it. We can talk about politicians, but not policy? I haven’t seen that to be the case. Can we talk about politicians and their language as compared to language of private citizens or public figures such as actors/singers/celebrities? Based on some of the comments which were deleted vs. those that were not, it’s really not clear to me. We can make a comment about a politician, but we can’t make a general comment about “our leaders,” with no political affiliation noted? I’m completely confused.

A comedy show is a platform. Political comedy is about the oldest comedy around. It’s been a thing for thousands of years, even if it falls flat and isn’t funny.

If you are saying that people will defend one entity for the exact same thing they are outraged in another of a different ideology, then I agree.

It would be racist if it criticized her for something she has no control over - her race - vs. her actions or words.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

Err on the side of caution. If I deleted every reference to DT, as an example, I’d be here all day. When I say you can mention politicians, here are examples of what you can say:
• DT is POTUS
• DT has 5 kids
• DT was accused of sexual harassment.

Where people get into trouble is when they start saying things like
• DT’s policy on X will result in Y

If you really want to know why I deleted your post, you can certainly PM me, and I will explain. But for now, I am also going to quote another aspect of ToS:

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting. There is a strong double standard about all this.

But the networks no longer have a monopoly on “news” dissemination, and they have permanently lost the confidence, trust, and respect of a large (and growing) cross section of Americans. They’re still coming to grips with that reality.

As far as someone “lining their pockets”, I suppose that’s in the eye of the beholder. She did have a business going before the election. I think I prefer that model to the one that involves leaving office “dead broke”, and magically winding up later running a $.5 billion dollar tax exempt “foundation”. YMMV.

“Political comedy is about the oldest comedy around. It’s been a thing for thousands of years, even if it falls flat and isn’t funny.”

I was raised in a very political family. Grandfather, father, uncles, brothers. Interestingly none of the females have been interested. I have been around political comedy my entire life because of this. One of my family members used to draw political cartoons.
The comedy back then was interesting and mostly funny.
Today comediennes are using comedy as a smoke screen to be mean and nasty toward politicians and their families without being funny at all. This goes both ways.
Roseanne-comedienne- what she said was not funny
Kathy Griffin-comedienne- what she did was not funny
Samantha Bee-comedienne- what she said was not funny

Roseanne lost her job.
It’s too early to tell about Samantha Bee.
Kathy Griffin lost jobs, and both her and her mother had numerous, credible death threats made because she was mocking something specifically said by a politician who was elected for office even after making crass, vulgar and sexist comments (that she was mocking)…
there’s the double standard again.

Stephen Colbert occasionally uses vulgarity in his monologues and I find it funny. Many months ago he used a bad phrase when telling a joke about the President and Putin.

BTW, CDC officials has a list of “forbidden” words and phrases, which include “evidence-based," “science-based,” "vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender” and “fetus.” I find this vulgar.

Okay - then what about Joy Behar equating religion to mental illness? Is that okay? What if she equated the muslim faith to mental illness - how would that go over? One thing I try and do, is if it was said about someone or something I approve of and support would I be okay with it? If it’s not okay to say it about one person, it can’t be okay to say it about another. End of story. If I don’t want you calling my daughter the c-word, I don’t want you calling any woman that. If I don’t want you using terrible terms to describe Valerie Jarrett, I don’t want you using horrible words to describe Sarah Sanders. Where’s the civility? How does this even need to be a discussion?

Very disappointing. While I don’t watch her show I did find some of her appearances on late night TV very funny. Thought she was a cut above the usual raunch you see from a lot of comedians. Guess not. This comment was totally over the line. Attacking other women in that manner brings nothing of value to the conversation.

Doubt she will survive this.

For me, personally, I don’t like calling women, any women, the C word. It really does bother me. Do I equate it with the N word? No, but I do think it’s a way of dehumanizing someone. I was bothered when Sarah Palin was called certain things, and I was really bothered when the maternity of her child was questioned by a prominent commentator up to and including demanding the release of her gynecological records. I was MORE bothered by Roseann’s picture in the Nazi uniform with the burned, people-shaped cookies.

So I don’t watch those people or listen to them. But I guess I don’t care enough about famous people to raise a ruckus. Maybe that makes me not a good person, but I just don’t think these folks are important enough to care about.

Surely you are not suggesting that this is limited to female comics. Seriously?
