When do scholarship students get decision back?

I heard something about last year’s college apps that were submitted by the scholarship deadline had gotten earlier admission decisions (like Feb or something)? Is this true?

The decisions for those who are invited to interview for the Trustee/Presidential/Dean’s scholarships came about the third week of January last year and the Trustee/Presidential interview/ two day campus visit was a month later. Notification of the awards came out in March sometime. I do not remember the exact date, but it was well before the UCLA and Berkeley released their decisions. Some people who applied by the scholarship deadline will not find out until later, but that does not necessarily mean they are rejected or will get no financial aid or merit awards.

For entering class of 2006, my S submitted his app by the scholarship deadline but didn’t get his acceptance until late March. Since he was a NMF, he was awarded Presidential NMF merit $, but was told he would not be interviewed for Presidential or Trustee.

HImom:
Just curious–What were your S’s stats?

Can’t really remember his GPA but believe it may have been around 3.5 UW, around the middle of his ubercompetitive prep school class in rank, really high SAT & ACT (don’t have the number any more as he graduated in 2006). He took about 13 AP exams & got 2 “4s” & the rest 5s; some good ECs including Eagle Scout. He was a NMF.

Seems he should have been offered an interview, those sound impressive!

the reason he did not is bc according to the usc scholarship website
https://camel.usc.edu/admapp_pdf/Scholarship.Chart.pdf</a>
the presidential, trustee, deans, associates, and national merit presidential are mutually exclusive
in other words, once you get one your cant get any of the others and since the kid in question listed usc as his first choice NMS school he effectivley chose to have the automatic half scholarship rather than a chance at the full.
(as i understand it, though im pretty sure this is accurate)

^not true.

An NMF who lists USC as their first choice can receive a trustee scholarship (they would obviously not also receive the presidential scholarship.) We have heard of many examples of that here on CC.

Actually, I don’t believe that’s true. No one I’ve spoken with has a great handle on who is selected & not selected for scholarship interviews. My D’s friends are not NMFs & had lower SAT scores than S (I believe), but were interviewed & received Presidential awards. They also took fewer APs, but interview well and were much more active with ECs than my S.

My S & D both had a lot of absences due to chronic health issues that dogged them thru HS. I believe this had a significant impact on their apps & KNOW it greatly reduced their ECs.

S had a lab partner & very good friend who was accepted at UPenn but rejected from USC. He chose Boston University, which gave him significant merit & need-based aid. None of us could understand his rejection, as USC was his 1st choice.

It goes to show that admission decisions are unpredictable.

Since the scholarship deadline was moved up about a week this year (Dec. 1, used to be Dec. 10), does that mean the scholarship acceptances will probably come a week earlier also?

These are the scholarship interview dates (listed for hosts of students). Usually the first two are for trustee and the last set are for presidential. I’m not sure how they compare to past years.

Monday - Tuesday
February 23 - 24

Thursday - Friday
February 26 - 27

Monday - Tuesday
March 2-3

Thursday - Friday
March 5 - 6

Monday - Tuesday
March 9 - 10

We went to the Trustee second section last year on Feb 25, 26 but it was on Mon and Tues

Those dates are similar to last year’s dates. My D had the second slot, Feb 25/26. They are not earlier dates so I expect that acceptance and scholarship invitations won’t be any earlier this year either, even though the application deadline was earlier. But who knows?

How much is the presidential, versus the trustee versus the NMF?
My son got zero but only 1900 sat.

https://camel.usc.edu/admapp_pdf/Scholarship.Chart.pdf</a></p>

NMSF is the equivalent of the Presidential: half tuition for all four years, plus any NM money. NMF’s do not interview for that, it is guaranteed if they are accepted to USC. Trustee is a full tuition scholarship for all four years, plus any NM money, if applicable. Presidential is half tuition for four years and one has to interview for it. Dean’s is one quarter tuition for four years.

They also have a leadership award that they give to some kids who are recommended by their HS & have strong skills demonatrated in HS student government that translates into merit $ awards.

I do not know when all these scholarships are awarded, but there are many available. Most of these are very competitive and some merit awards are given to members of certain ethnic or religious groups. For the Greeks there are Panhellenic Scholarships as well as individual greek letter organization scholarships.
Our alumni club in Atlanta hopes to award three/four partial scholarships
A family member attended the Marshall School Scholarship Luncheon. In the program was a list of scholarships. It was three pages long.

Here are some scholarships listed on the SC website other than Presidential and Trustee…
International Freshman
Asian Pacific Alumni
Black Alumni
Half Century
Jewish Leadership
Mexican American
Scions
Town and Gown
Alumnae Scholarship
Dean’s Scholarships

Back to the OP’s original question- the first CC member to report on acceptance last year was on January 28. (It was bessie!)
