When Does Your Student Go Back?

After reading another thread where there was mention of students already being back to college, I wondered when others go back…and what they are doing with their time?

My D is off until January 22nd, but she didn’t get home until the Friday before Christmas, so a solid month. She has yo-yo’d back and forth between my house and her Dads, visited a friend for NYE in Boston for a couple of days, and is headed to New Orleans next week with students she met in Budapest during study abroad. One is flying from Utah, one from Minnesota and mine from Boston. She’ll be home in time to do her laundry, spend time with grandparents and then get back to school, which is bittersweet…her last semester before graduation and serious adulting lol.

Yours?

D got home on December 22 from Italy and goes back to her regular school on January 19. She’s doing very little this break, which is fine with us.

S got home from his school in Beirut on December 18 and goes back on January 19. He is meeting with supporters and having a group of them over for dinner on Sunday night. He gets his wisdom teeth out on Monday. He’s also seen several other providers while he’s home. He’s trying to pack in a year of obligations and seeing friends in a month, so it’s pretty hectic for him.

D got home on 12/19, is going back the 15th. Classes begin the 16th. She is the last of her high school pack of friends to go back. Most are returning next week.

S18 came home on 12/18 and goes back during the MLK holiday weekend, so he has just over a month. S16 is returning to college after a year and a half hiatus; he moves in on 1/25 and starts classes the following Monday.

D always has a short break. Just three weeks. She’s headed overseas for study abroad in a couple of days, but normally, she’d be headed back up to college this Sunday. She usually just tries to see her friends as much as possible during her Christmas break. Last year, she spent the ENTIRE break in bed because she had a horrible case of double mono (both viruses at the same time.)

S17 got home on 12/20 and will be going back on 1/20. Most of the upstate SUNY schools close for much of January so that they can save money on heating, etc.

It’s been a quiet break. He is taking an online class and it’s very intense and a great deal of work. Last year, he took a comparative religion class on line in J-term and that just seemed like a lot less work for him. He is spending time with friends. He stayed up half the night last night to finish all of the work for his class that is due by tonight because he wants to go our to dinner with his friends and hang out. He has to hit submit on the last assignment before he can leave.

My girls go back on the 13th and will have been here a month. While I love them dearly, it’s too long for me and for them! They are both pretty bored. They tried to get jobs for the break but with no success. The dog is happy though.

D came home on 12/18 and went back yesterday 1/3 for athletics. Classes start 1/14.

My kiddo needed to be back for a January 2 start.

@suzy100, my cat is pretty happy to have D home as well. Normally we’re up together before 6 am, now he gets up at 6, eats and crawls back in bed with her. Its 8:15 and they are both happily snoring away lol. If I could convince him to be an inside cat 24/7 I’d send him to Seattle with her when she moves.

@thumper1, wow, that’s early…can you say what state out of curiosity?

@techmom99 D goes to upstate NY so maybe that’s why the late start? But really, her weather north of Albany is very very similar to here at home in southeast MA.

I have one leaving 1/6 and the other leaves 1/13. The first attends a school with Jan Plan. I love having my boys home, but they both love their schools and are ready to go back.

It’s great having them home…and it’s great knowing they love where they attend and want to get back at it. This summer will likely be S’s last one here as internship and job after grad will take him to a larger market. Trying to enjoy as much time as we can. Golf, golf and golf!

My bio kids are now graduates, but I can talk about my student “kids!” Freshman come back Monday for a week of service learning. All others return 1/14.

S17 got home 12/20 and goes back 1/21. Seems to be the standard start date for NJ state schools. His friends all seemed to be home WAY earlier and are going back earlier. His friend from Northeastern goes back this weekend.
He’s been doing a lot of nothing (unless PS4 counts as something???) but will be studying for his Praxis exam next week.

Classes start the 7th. She’s at a school with a 4-4-1 schedule, so no long winter break. Honestly, I think she’ll be ready to go back.

One of my kids always had to be back for undergrad classes the Monday after the New Years holiday. It was a headache because that is a hugely expensive and busy air travel day.

My second kid went back to undergrad the second week of January.

If your kids are in a school on a quarter system, they need to go back no later than this weekend since the winter quarter usually starts next week. Many schools out west and some in the midwest (but very few on the east coast) are on a quarter system.

D’s last final ended at 1:30pm on Fri 12/21. She made it to her 4:30pm flight home thankfully as it is a cross country flight and she was already getting home so close to Christmas!

Spring classes don’t resume until 1/28 but she is flying back on 1/17 for some school activities. I didn’t realize her classes don’t start until nearly 10 days later. So late!

I’m just hoping she will make it for her brother’s high school graduation. I don’t know her exam schedule yet but the university’s last day of exams is the same day her brother graduates. Fingers crossed she will be done NLT the day before but even then she might have to take the red eye home and go directly from airport to his graduation. ?
