Hello Everyone!
I am currently a first generation hispanic college freshmen at a local JC. Looking into my future goals I have two really big ones: One, to open a non-profit organization. Two, become a history teacher. Currently I am set on going political science, transferring to UC Davis, and then transfer to grad school, but with me wanting to do both of these things what should I do first? Should I go and get my teaching certification first ? Or do I need to go to business school (therefore change my major) in order to start my non-profit ? I’m so confused as to what to do. If anyone could please help and give their own experiences and ideas it would be greatly appreciated !Thank you!

Can you do both at once - history teacher by day, nonprofit entrepreneur by night? That way you can pay the bills and improve the world at the same time.

I would work on getting the teacher certification first. In the mean time, volunteer at different non-profits that are close to what you want. Find out what they do…what works, what doesn’t work…why is it is necessary for you to start a new non-profit instead of working with an existing one. Talk to the founders and ask them about how they started.
As you get older you will have more life experience and it would be better to start your non-profit then.
