Hockey season is upon us so let’s get talkin’

Most hockey fans on here know I’m a die-hard Wings fan. They have made the playoffs every year of my life and I’ve heard all this talk about how THIS is going to be the year they don’t make it (mind you, I’ve heard this 3-4 years in a row now…). I was pleasantly surprised with how they played last night

Leafs lost a heartbreaker in the last 42 seconds in their home opener. It was fun being there, though, no doubt we are in for a long season. As usual.

Hawks had an ugly win, but a W is a W. One thing, Romani, as a Hawk’s fan, we had some really bad years in there. I feel you. It was a huge bummer, but we loved the team anyway. You never know. I would never count the Red Wings out, even if I wanted to.

Caps finally have a coach with NHL experience and went out and got 2 solid defensemen… something their last GM didn’t do for his entire 15+ years in the job.

Caps have some good offensive talent, and a stronger blue line this year. Very young starting goalie that shows good potential. Still missing a 2nd line center. A couple rookies have the potential to make an impact, Evgeny Kuznetsov (22) and André Burakowsky (19).

Could be a rough start as the team adjusts to the new coach and new system, but Caps should be there to compete in the playoffs and maybe make some noise this year.

Gotta say, the Rangers looked really good in their opener against the Blues 2 nights ago. Duquesne is looking solid, as are most of the new players. Rangers should have another shot at the Cup this year, seem to be better than last year.

I had my book club during the first Penguins game and I forgot to set up the DVR so I can’t comment much yet although they did win. Looking at the roster changes and with a new coach, I don’t know what to expect. Now that baseball season is over for the Pirates, I will set the DVR to automatically “tape” all of the games shown on the local channel. Sid did well with 2 goals and an assist and Pascal came back from his season ending injury last year with 4 points, a career high. I can’t wait for the next game!

What amazes me about NHL is how long the playing season is.7 months. That’s a grueling amount of travel and bruises. I follow the Tampa Bay Lightning, but I’ve got to admit it is difficult for me getting worked up about hockey after being in Florida my entire life.

Longtime hockey nut here. At this very moment, I’m combining that love with my new passion–college hunting. I flew down to Raleigh yesterday with DW and DS to visit UNC and Duke. Last night we watched our Islanders beat the Hurricanes at PNC. This morning we toured Elon. Now I’m at the airport waiting to fly home to NY, where tonight we’ll see the same teams at the Isles home opener. Excitement is really building for this final season on Long Island before moving to Brooklyn next year.

@Cardinal Fang, my season is 7 months as well! (9, if you count States and Summer tourneys) And I’m nowhere near NHL - 18U AAA travel hockey. It is a long season, but the guys in the NHL have a bit of motivation beyond the sheer love of the game: money :P

Devils family here! Happy to start out with a win against the Flyers! But still adjusting to life without the greatest goalie of all-time. Miss you, Martie!

Sharks have back-to-back shutouts for their first two games. But they need to work on their powerplays. They don’t have a defenseman to lead the PP now that Dan Boyle is a Ranger.
