Where are you applying for film school?

Ithaca is going to be tough for her to get into because of her GPA (rough sophomore year). It was on the Hollywood Reporter Top 25 Film School list which may make it even more competitive. We’ve also heard it’s a pretty boring area.

The plus side for us is that it’s only 1 hour 45 minutes from us.

Darn OK. Yes Ithaca is a known film school. My two applied mostly to top 25 film programs so I am less familiar with other programs not on « the lists. »

I know earlier in the thread Columbia College Chicago came up. They are now accepting “express” applications with no essay. Since D26 hasn’t finished hers yet  , she went ahead and submitted her application.

That is interesting. I wonder why? Seems like that school is bucking the trend of asking for more and more.

Honestly? My guess is that they are trying to get their numbers up. They still require a portfolio submission for the Faculty Recognition Award and for BFA programs.

That makes sense.

Visited Ithaca yesterday. D26 loved the school but we didn’t get to see much of the actual film/media areas. Hubby went with us to this tour and he really liked how safe the campus seemed and how close it is to us (about 1 hour 45 minutes). Expensive, but D26 feels like the reputation of the film school might be worth it. The only other real drawback is the lack of proximity to a true “big city”, like NYC.

Do you have more campuses to visit?

Yes, we still want to see Hofstra and Rider, but we probably won’t get to them until after EA applications are in. D26 has decided she wants to apply to one reachy reach school just to see if she can get in- that one is Syracuse. We will wait on that visit until after decisions are out in March.

I visited Syracuse with our youngest and really liked it. She was applying to the dual business/film degree Whitman-Newhouse option and got in. I thought it was a great for for her, but she decided to go to USC for film production. My eldest applied and got into Newhouse for film but was a COVID year and didn’t tour. Amazing campus, facilities, beautiful buildings.

My husband said it made him want to go back ro college haha.

would she apply to Newhouse or to the BFA option? Newhouse is I think the better funded of the two and is more commercial but many people really want the BFA.

Syracuse gave some of the best merit money!

I think Newhouse. She is very interested in a media minor or even a media double major.

So the acceptances are coming in! She’s in at Point Park, Marywood, Rider and Columbia Chicago- all for film.

The only one she’s seriously considering is Point Park, but it’s nice for her confidence!

(And she was offered a spot in the Honors program at Columbia Chicago which was very cool!)

What else are you waiting on for the EA cycle?

Quinnipiac, Ithaca, and Hofstra as far as schools with a film major. Then there’s Bloomsburg and Marist for Media Production.

Where is your student leaning right now?

Right now her top two where she’s been accepted are Quinnipiac and Point Park. I think she should seriously look at Hofstra. And she got an email that Rowan University offers a three year accelerated degree for their film and television BA with free summer tuition and room/board so she’s intrigued.

Still waiting on Ithaca, which is in her top three.

So she is still putting in applications? I know many kids are still submitting right up to January.

She may submit to Emerson or Syracuse but she’s kind of burnt out on writing essays. Plus she really wants to focus on her portfolio for Point Park. So I’m not sure.

Those are good schools. Both of mine applied to those schools for film.
