Yes, she was admitted to Dodge. Click on her major here at athttps://catalog.chapman.edu/content.php?catoid=45&navoid=2384 and then some classes. They range from $75 to $300 for the beginning classes to $1,000 for the senior thesis.
My husband and I are Syracuse alums and D23 loved her summer there, but she was initially waitlisted for Newhouse and when she was finally admitted, she couldn’t get pass their initial rejection. D23 was also admitted to Fordham Lincoln Center and waitlisted at Tisch. Even getting waitlisted at NYU felt like a win. Had looked at Skidmore but Film is only a minor there.
Regarding Ithaca, what we liked was the town of Ithaca, Park’s facilities, equipment (one of the largest equipment rooms we saw), LA program and alumni connections. What we didn’t like was the campus. It had the least personality of the 13 colleges we visited, and the dorms and dining hall were pretty depressing. On the other hand, it was the most affordable of the ones she seriously considered.
D24 got off Tisch WL yesterday! Would you pick Dodge or Tisch, she got no FA in Tisch and a decent scholarship + Loan from Dodge. VEry conflicted. Would love to hear a film mom perspective. Thanks
Congratulations. That’s a big accomplishment for your daughter. I think it comes down to what you can afford. NYU is almost $100k. If D23 had gotten off its waitlist, it would not have been a realistic possibility for us since NYU is not known for merit aid, and we didn’t qualify for financial aid at any of the schools she was accepted to. I personally would not take on debt other than the maximum federal loan to go to either school. Was just talking to a friend yesterday whose daughter is a recent college grad, moved to LA, did an unpaid internship with a side retail job to pay some bills but she couldn’t find a job in the film industry. Her parents are paying her rent but luckily she was just offered a corporate job in retail, nothing to do with her film degree though.
D23 applied to NYU at the insistence of my spouse. Neither D nor I saw it as a good fit for her. I’ve heard that it’s not as collaborative as some film schools and that the students put thousands of dollars of their own money into their film projects. Although Chapman didn’t feel right for my daughter, and again didn’t like that they had the extra class fees, they do provide funding for the student projects as does Emerson.
Thank you so much, she has worked very hard…but yes I’m feeling the same way…is such a huge debt worth it? She is very excited about it, so makes it very hard to question her instinct.
I am curious to hear how people are doing as we navigate another cycle for film applications. These applications are intense and those EA deadlines come early. Some kids are done or are pretty close to done with applications. Good luck everyone!
S25 has applied to 6 schools and has one admission (ASU), so we’re in pretty good shape. He doesn’t really have a first choice - if money were no object, Loyola Marymount would be his first choice… but factoring money in will probably change things (if he gets in). It also doesn’t have as robust of a Korean program as some of his other choices, and that’s a big deal for him.
My S25 has applied to LMU as well (same thoughts as you). He also applied to DePaul, Syracuse, Ithaca, Emerson, Fordham, Marymount Manhattan, Hofstra, Quinnipiac, Chapman, St. John’s, Loyola Chicago, Temple and has a few more if he doesn’t like his options (and costs!!) during EA. He should have applied to Drexel EA but got worn out before submitting. Those film supplements are brutal! I think he ended up with like 20 extra supplements, including some films. Each program is so unique, so he will have a lot to evaluate when he gets the decisions.
I would not worry if you have not heard. I thought decisions STARTED coming out Dec 15th but actually they try to COMPLETE them by Dec 15th. So you should hear soon.
My student received an email directing her to the DePaul portal, and the decision was there.
Also, my memory from a few years ago was that DePaul did not have a film creative supplement. My student reported that this year DePaul had a required Creative Statement and an optional Creative Portfolio.
I thought that was interesting. I wonder if the number of applicants for film has increased and they were looking for additional tools to help them select students.
Yes, DePaul had a 3 minute film and an essay. It’s a top 25 program on all of the lists so they may be getting more applicants, like you said. Also “The Bear” is filmed at Cinespace, ha ha. Not that the students have anything to do with it, but it ups the cool factor. I think DePaul is MY first choice, but the financials matter for us and our aspiring filmmaker, so we are trying to keep an open mind to see how things shake out.
Very helpful to know. Good news I hope? My son hasn’t heard anything from them, which is concerning of course. He LOVES that school. Hoping he hears something soon.
NOTHING a on his DePaul portal - well, no change. It is just the same checklist with green check marks for all items. I’m assuming it will e obvious if it changes. Last night I got an email for prospective parents, but still no change to his portal.
