Where Do You Spend Most?

Excluding fixed costs i.e Utilities, Mortgage, School/College Fees, Car etc

I’m finding most of our gratuitous spending goes on eating out; I do cook, and, if I say so myself, I’m a good cook. However, we have gotten into the habit of eating out more than we eat at home, and I’d like to reverse course before it becomes an unhealthy habit that will be hard to break.

Costco.

I don’t buy the dog the cheapest brand of food, and I just bought a new washer and dryer and new glasses (first new pair in 8 years). But on a regular basis, otherwise, I spend very little on other than fixed expenses.

Travel. Even more than Costco!

In the past year, since we moved to the west coast from the midwest, it has been on travel. Hopefully that will go down now that my D’s wedding is over and the extended family are used to us being further away.

I think the big expense in the next year will be a newer to us car and new clothes. Neither H nor I have bought new clothes for years and it’s starting to show.

Groceries (regular store).

Medical expenses.

The grocery store. And various insurance.

US Government, state government and town government. Second place isn’t even close.

For fun stuff. It’s golfing related.

Food! Both eating out and groceries. Three teen boys are expensive!

When I do spend money, I try to buy locally (appliances, glasses, books, dog food, etc.), rather than online or from national chains.

I spend a lot on taxes, no question. Spend a lot supporting our child who is medically disabled. We also spend a lot discretionarily—travel and dining out. We honestly don’t make an effort to track and categorize spending, as long as it’s well below income.

My kids’ extra curriculars without a doubt. They combine to more than ANY of our other bills, including things like rent and car payments.

  1. Travel 2. clothing and dining out are tied.

Hey taxes and golf aren’t worth any likes? It makes me feel like a bad person. #-o

Excluding those fixed costs -

wine: we buy both high end and average wine, but a lot of it

groceries. I like to cook. I use fresh, mostly organic ingredients. In the summer I like to shop the farmer’s market.

Eating out: we don’t eat out often except for celebrations, but we tend to splurge big time when we do.

Travel: I wish we spent more on it, but it takes time.

Last fall dh was a visiting professor in Hong Kong - we ate out or had take out every day and traveled to Mainland China twice, Taiwan once and did a lot of hiking and sightseeing in Hong Kong itself. Would love to do more of that more often.

Travel, hands down.

Also, WOW @mathmom. That sounds pretty magical.

Groceries, at several stores including BJ’s. I like to cook and we mostly eat at home.

Home improvement is a big category for us that should hopefully go down a bit next year (some of it is done through Costco so we get those Costco Visa % cashback). Our weekend shopping usually includes a trek to Costco, HD, and the garage wine district.

I am seriously considering blowing big $$$ on a handbag. ?

Medical expenses and travel.

Before that, college. It cost appreciably more than our house.

Last year, we had a broken water main, a new water heater and a fair amount of tree work. Not a typical year.
