Top shelf of the owner’s bedroom closet is where we store our carryon bags. The shelf is narrow, but the bags wedge perfectly between the shelf and the ceiling so there is a little overhang but the bags stay put. The big duffels get stored in the utility room in the basement (we don’t have an attic in this house). Spiders are definitely present there but they seem to leave the duffels alone.

We keep ours in a dedicated closet the basement.
In AZ, our nested luggage is on the high, top shelf of the master bedroom closet. At the cabin, they are under the folding table in the lower-level laundry room. No issue with either location.

In our over-full storage room. A bunch of Briggs and Riley and then the Away luggage we’ve purchased in the past year.
I have got to purge.
We’re fortunate to have a lot of extra space.
How much do you have? I wouldn’t keep my guest room closets empty all the time. I’d store there and when you have guests just move them temporarily to the attic or your own room.

Until recently, we always kept ours up in the attic. It has a permanent staircase, but it definitely not climate controlled. In the last couple of years, I’ve been lazy, especially since we go of out town more often. I keep the carry ons in a linen closet and the full suitcases in the corner of one of the kid’s rooms. They’re not using them anymore except for random weekend. And the rooms are big enough that they can deal with them sitting there.
Isn’t this what spare bedrooms are for?

I travel pretty frequently for work, so I keep my main suitcase tucked away in the corner of my bedroom. It’s next to H’s dresser and in kind of a hidden location. The other luggage is in the closet of a guest bedroom that I’m using as my office. If I want to put my suitcase away, that’s where it goes too.
One reason it’s there: one of my dogs cries if he sees us getting luggage out of the closet/sees luggage. When it’s always in the bedroom, if he’s in another part of the house, I can often pack it without his noticing. And yes, I sneak it out to the trunk of the car when he’s not looking as well. I’ve also had H take him on a walk and I’ve waited until he was out of sight range to take the suitcase out.

We keep ours in our walk-in attic which is not climate controlled and never have had any problems. My small overnight tote is in a closet. But agree with those who say you may want to keep at least the suitcases you use regularly in the guest room closet. Do your guests unpack and use the entire closet? Can you put shelves on one side for luggage etc. and keep some hanging space for guests?
Get the largest garbage bag you can find, cover the suitcase(s) and put it in the attic as long as it’s easily accessible and safe to maneuver. We kept ours in our full attic which gets hot as hell in the summer and cold as hell in the winter! As long as it’s dry!

We live in CT and have kept our luggage in the attic for 3 decades with no problems. The attic is not climate controlled.

We’ve got two closets in a large laundry room area and keep large pieces of luggage (hard-sided) in one area and the soft-sided luggage (totes, duffles, etc) on a shelf in the same closet.

We have stored luggage in the attic and on the top shelves of closets (with popcorn ceilings this was a messy affair) in our previous residences without issues with spiders. They did get dusty and cobwebby on the outside but the insides remained pristine.
After the renovation, we decided to use the loft that existed above the primary closets due to a sloping ceiling and put sliding doors and a library ladder. This is where our many suitcases live (DH has an extensive collection as he doesn’t like to throw anything away). The loft is climate controlled.
We have a finished attic with little cubby closets under the roofline.
We have some friends who have a gazillion suitcases because every time they travel they have to buy a new suitcase where they are vacationing so the wife can bring home all the souvenir gifts she buys for friends and family members!

Carryons are in the main walk in closet. Husbands is under his hanging shirts. Mine is next to the door, where it is a clothes horse for stuff that would normally be tossed on a bedroom chair. A much smaller carryon is on the upper shelf in that closet.
Our big suitcases are on a high shelf in the garage. They are seldom used.
Wanted to add:
Our house doesn’t have a basement. And the attic is hard to access (i.e., there’s no pull-down stairs/ladder to climb up) so storing anything the attic is not an option.
We also don’t have a lot of luggage. Husband has 1 suitcase + some travel backpacks. I have 2 rolling carry-on bags + 1 ‘under the seat in front of you’ type of bag. It all fits easily in the closet with lots of room to spare. If we needed to, we could store extra stuff in the garage.
Oh yea, we store backpacks in hall closet, so we can access as desired. It is handy and works for us. Our crawl space above the house & is hot & not particularly accessible, so we don’t go up there often.
