Our house doesn’t have a hall closet, I guess no one owned coats 110 years ago. My parent’s home in the same town was 50 years older, but had a hall closet, although in was very tiny.
Our 116 year old house doesn’t have a hall closet either, nor do a few bedrooms. The master has a large walk in closet, but it was built roughly on the 60s. The master bath also has a large walk-in linen closet. Older S’ has a large walk-in that was added roughly then. It has the dumbwaiter (no longer working) that goes to the butlers pantry below. Younger S had none. The 4th “Xbox room” has none. The 5th has a tiny thing built into one corner.
For coats, we have a coat rack in the foyer and a dozen hooks in the hallway by the washer/dryer closet near the sunroom/kitchen. In the summer, the coats are stored in the linen closet in the master bathroom.
We use a large walk in closet in oldest sons (grown & gone) bedroom which we use as the ski/travel closet - all the ski jackets, jumpers, pants, boots, and hiking gear. All the luggage (a few complete sets), and carry-ons, backpacks, fanny packs, cross body bags, and other travel essentials in that closet. Water stuff is the basement in a very large plastic tub.

We have an old kitchen table that sits in our basement (it has sides but they fold down), and most of our luggage is piled on there. If we have trips close together we just leave the luggage in one of the kid’s rooms. (My H has renamed them, but they’ll always be the kid’s rooms to me).

We have a luggage shelf in our master closet so we put our big suitcases up there. We put the carry-ons on another high shelf in the closet because we have high ceilings.

Our hard-sided luggage lives in the shed (no climate control, four seasons) - it gets Lysol-sprayed inside every time we finish a trip and there have been no critters. Our soft-sided luggage is in the primary closet with other totes etc.

Garage. Good idea about the garbage bags. I also like the shelf that Patsmom has for the Away luggage, which I use the most, which is onlyn3x a year.

There are washable luggage covers that can be used to cover suitcases to prevent luggage from getting dirty. Also can be used to keep luggage from getting dusty during storage.

Some of you have a ton more luggage than us. We only have one suitcase each—it’s a carry on. We also have several backpacks. We have tried larger bags but have a much easier time traveling with just one soft-sided carry on (which H generally checks) and one backpack.

You all have me thinking. Our kids’ bedrooms still have things of theirs in them, but their closets have nothing they own in them anymore. When they visit, they wouldn’t care at all if a carryon bag was in each closet…and that’s what we use the most. There would still be plenty of room for them to hang clothes in the closet when they visit. Actually, DD does not spend the night ever. She only lives 60 minutes drive away. Maybe I’ll put our carry on bags in her former closet! We use those the most!

I have a rule. Extra bedrooms closets can be used for storage of used items (luggage, holiday decor, gift wrapping stuff) but NOT for junk or because another storage space for “extras” is full - if you have that much “extras”, it’s time to pair down. H would fill every closet with stuff if I let him - and did at our previous home. When we moved 2.5 years ago I gave him 90% of the basement for his “stuff” - no storage of “stuff on the main two living floors!

I use about half our big finished basement for storing things so the luggage goes there. After the nest emptied I emptied the attic because it was hot, dusty and I hated going up there because I either bumped my head on a beam or almost fell down the stairs. After lots of clearing out the remaining “attic stuff” is in the basement storage area.

And adding in those extra bedrooms guests still need to be able to hang their items or store their suitcase! Guests are usually our kids though so I’m not as worried about what they see in my closet - go ahead and hang your sundress next to my mini Christmas tree!!

Here’s where I’ve got mine stashed. Husband’s rolling carry on is in a different part of same closet. I really don’t like having to check luggage and I don’t like having to bring large luggage. 
Plus I’m cheap and I don’t want to pay fees for checked luggage!

I keep carry-on luggage and small backpacks on shelves above clothes in the master bedroom closet. Big luggage is in the eaves of our attic which is finished but has no air conditioning so it’s hot in the summer.

My guest bedroom is only frequented by my daughter, usually over the holidays. She has no desire to hang up her clothes, she lives out of her suitcase when she visits. I did buy a suitcase stand for her to use (which folds up nicely in the guest room closet when not in use.
The guestroom closet is home to the off season coats (so they don’t fill up the entry/coat closet, some of my off season tops, and the stuff we rarely use but still need (my husband’s suit, my fancy dresses, etc.)
