Where else should we visit / Aerospace Engineering

My daughter is a rising senior and wants to major in Aerospace Engineering. Her ACT is 32. Old SAT cr620/math 740/ w710. Her new SAT is not resulted yet. She has 3.8 unweighted GPA. Weighted is well over because she will have 9AP/dual enrollment after graduation. She is very involved including sports, orchestra, student govt, and debate team. We’ve looked at MIT, RPI, WPI, Georgia Tech, U Alabama and UMASS. Where else should we be looking?

Purdue University is very well known for engineering.

Cost constraints and state of residency?

Univ of Maryland has an excellent program. It’s almost next door to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center…should be plenty of internships, research opportunities etc.

Residency Massachusetts. Cost constraints would like the best deal but will consider all options. Middle class family probably won’t qualify for much.

For aerospace, and engineering in general, your list appears to be excellent. For a program with mechanical engineering as the option (a factor at UMass as well) but with excellent opportunities in music, consider URochester.

Besides schools in your list and Purdue and Maryland that have been suggested, consider Michigan and UIUC also.

Olin College
Embry-Riddle

Run the Net Price Calculators on the above-listed schools’ websites to get an idea of what you’ll be paying. OOS publics rarely give need-based aid beyond loans (or Pell for low income)

For schools like UIUC and Georgia Tech, you’d likely be full pay…about $48k per year.

Would you consider paying $48k per year?

Only if BAMA changes the presidential. Lol

U of Michigan is strong.

My D2 is also a rising senior interested in aerospace. I would second several of the recs above, and add University of Alabama-Huntsville. It’s across the street from Redstone Arsenal, so it has unique (and plentiful) internship and co-op opportunities. My H and D2 visited on an engineering open house weekend in April, and it’s now my daughter’s top pick – even though she has free tuition at University of Maryland.

They offer automatic merit for four years. With a 32 ACT and 3.8 GPA, your daughter is automatically eligible for a full tuition scholarship. There are many other scholarships available in engineering to which she could apply, as well.

Good luck on your search!

U Dayton has assured merit for her https://www.udayton.edu/apply/undergraduate/affordability.php and a similar relationship to the Air Force Research Labs as UAH has with Redstone.

University of Colorado - Boulder, University of Texas - Austin, Texas A&M.

Clarkson? The male:female ratio might help with merit/aid. Worth a look if she can stand the winters.

As far as UAH, it’s unusual in that a severe local need for research summoned it in to existence:

During his 1961 address to the Alabama Legislature, he [ Wehrner von Braun ] pointedly said: … “Opportunity goes where the best people go, and the best people go where good education goes. To make Huntsville more attractive to technical and scientific people across the country - and to further develop the people we have now - the academic and research environment of Huntsville and Alabama must be improved.”

Von Braun’s talk had great influence. The legislature granted $3 million in seed money to lay the foundation for the UAHuntsville Research Institute. Today, the university graduates 40 Ph.D.s and 350 students with master’s degrees annually, and has earned recognition from the Carnegie Foundation as one of only 73 public universities in the nation with very high research activity.

I just checked the U Dayton merit, and the highest award is equal to about 1/2 tuition. UAH is still a much better deal.

@NerdMom88 Huntsville over Tuscaloussa? We toured Tiusaloussa and she loved it.

By student standardized scoring, UA-Huntsville and Auburn (tied) are tops in Alabama, should you want to consider this as a measure of UA-H’s quality.

@Michthebeech She is going to look further into UA at Tuscaloosa, but hasn’t yet because for a large state school, Maryland would be a better deal financially for her, is higher rated in aerospace, and near family. As far as comparing UA and UAH – for aerospace, she was very excited about the co-op and internship opportunities at UAH. Also, her GPA and ACT qualify her for tuition plus room at UAH, so it’s more affordable than UA. (That’s assuming something doesn’t change with their merit before they open applications this fall, of course!)

UA Tuscaloosa and Huntsville are vastly different schools. Tuscaloosa is a large flagship, more than half from OOS, with big time sports and spirit. Huntsville is a small regional one-fifth the size, with 87% from Alabama, mostly STEM. Hard to see how both would be a good fit for the same person.
