I hear that some of the well known Schools are beginning to lay people off in response to the down economy. I heard that NMH is making some changes for instance. What do other people hear and in what areas are the layoffs occurring?

Parlabane- from what we have heard first hand from our teacher friends, they all are, big and small, well endowed and not so well endowed. Some is by natural attrition, ie, not replacing people who retire or interns who have finished the year. Some schools have publicly announced this on their web sites, others are planning letters right now to go home to parents. These are unprecedented economic times for the schools and things have changed drastically from a year ago. March is the hiring season for prep school teachers, and I suspect that the schools want to tell teachers and staff now so that they can look for another job. Terrible times.

The difference about NMH is that they do everything in public/full disclosure - straight forward and flexible. Those let go were advised before Jan 1, so they could get a jump start on job hunting.

Teachers who taught PE Only are gone. Dance program will have one full-time, not two.(Junior teacher already has a dance job lined up elsewhere.) Russian program will be phased out. College Counseling will be down by one (It was way above CC BS average before.) Senior teachers will be reducing admin and increasing class time (which assumes that some junior teachers will be out.) More focus on teaching and less on special projects. Sounds good to me.

Every cut I’ve heard of makes sense - almost like the economic downturn provides political support to do what was needed all along. What are other school doing?

Silence…

Toadstool- as other threads have mentioned, a lot of these decisions were made at winter (Feb) trustee meetings. Yes, there is opportunity during these tough times to restructure, but you have to have compassion for the people whose jobs were cut.

Add Milton to the list.

Blair is not planning any staff reductions in the short term. In this Headmaster letter, [Blair Academy - Parents](http://www.blair.edu/Parents/par_news_headmaster012909.shtm), he writes:

I don’t know which schools these are.
