I have been looking everywhere for a list that specifies BSMD programs where you are allowed to “apply-out” without loosing your spot in the med school that’s associated with the program. So far, I’ve only found Rice/Baylor and FAU allow this option. I’m assuming that everyone knows what “apply-out” means when it comes to these programs. For those who do not, say I go to the FAU BSMD program. There, I am allowed to apply to multiple MD programs after undergrad, but I will not loose my place at FAU med school, so if I get into a Med school like Harvard I can go, but if I do not get into any med schools, I still have my place at FAU med school. The process of applying to other med schools while having a conditional acceptance through a BSMD program is called “applying out”.
I’m thinking this thread can serve as a place where future BSMD applicants can learn which programs would allow them to apply to other med schools, and which ones do not.
Please reply with all the BSMD/BAMD programs you know of, and their rules regarding “applying out”.
UIC GPPA allows students to apply out and keep their seat. About 20% usually go to another medical school. However, to apply you must be an Illinois resident.
VCU is not binding. I got accepted to GMED this week. During the interview session, the dean said you are freely allowed to apply out to other med schools without losing your seat. Although, he is quite confident you will choose to stay at VCU for med school.
Oh yeah I found out I was mistaken and forgot to let you guys know. I asked on r/VCU and someone said that it was binding, but they were mistaken. Thanks!
