Which College at Cambridge Has the Most American Students in its Undergrad?

I am visiting Cambridge this summer with my child, and wondered if anyone knows which college at Cambridge has the most American students? Also, which college at Cambridge has the most students in Medicine?
Thank you!

Last year there were 3371 students accepted to Cambridge, of whom 23 were from the US. There are 29 colleges at Cambridge. I don’t know which of them took the most American students, and suspect that it will be difficult to figure that out, but there is no college that will have a significant number of US students.

Apologies if you know this, but entry to Medicine in the UK (at any university) is exceptionally difficult for overseas students, as there are very strict limits on student counts. Cambridge is allowed a maximum of 22 overseas students (out of 260 places). I don’t know first-hand for Cambridge, but Oxford rarely takes it’s full quota (their quota is 14; last year they took 3). The reason for the quotas is clinical placements, which are controlled by the National Health Service.

Sorry, I didn’t account for study abroad students, who are there for a full- or part- year, but if your child is planning on going to Cambridge full time, the overlap is not that much between the enrolled and visiting students.

I agree with the above. If you are talking about undergraduate students, a college which has 3 Americans has a lot! But there are about 800 American graduate students. They are a lot more common. There are also a lot of American students studying abroad on some kind of 1 term or 1 year programme, but the majority of them have little actual contact with the directly enrolled students.

You’re not going to wander around and bump into students in the summer though. They are all on vacation. You will see US students on summer schools (the university takes their money, they stay in university accommodation and have no other contact with the university but go home and say they studied at Cambridge. What they mean is, they could pay to stay there).

If you want you child to attend a foreign university but not to associate with any non-Americans (I can’t tell from your question if this is the case), it seems that many manage this at St Andrews But I really think this is missing the point of studying abroad.

I bet Trinity has the largest number of medical students, but only because it is the largest college. There isn’t a specialist medical college. colleges are more like dorms, but some teaching takes place there. Lecture are central so all medical students from all colleges would attend the same lectures.

I am not sure I understand why they don’t take their quota. Do you know how many med students were accepted at Cambridge from the US? Thank you so much.

Cambridge’s acceptance stats don’t distinguish by subject by country- sorry! I have heard the Oxford and Cambridge travel teams actively discouraging international students from applying to medicine though.

I would guess that at least one reason is that they take a lot of heat for international students taking spaces away from UK students (for example: <a href=“Straight-A students forced abroad to study medicine as NHS recruits record foreign doctors | Daily Mail Online”>Straight-A students forced abroad to study medicine as NHS recruits record foreign doctors | Daily Mail Online).

I would be surprised if any of the US students accepted last year were accepted for medicine, and shocked if more than 1 was- but I don’t have any first hand information.

Did you have a son or daughter attempt to apply to Cambridge or Oxford for Medicine, by chance? What is your advice?

I have a daughter at Oxford, a niece at Cambridge (neither doing medicine), and have mentored a fair number of students who have applied to one or other of them (as well as some other UK / Irish unis)

Can you say more about what your child’s plans / aspirations are? is s/he planning to practice medicine in the UK or the US? what are the drivers for medicine and Cambridge in particular?

Yeah, I think Oxford and Cambridge have very small and meticulously observed quotas for international medicine students. I know an international girl (from elsewhere in the EU) who got into Cambridge for medicine, but she was very much the exception. My counsellor for the UK actively discouraged us from applying to Oxbridge (or anywhere else in the UK, really) for medicine and advised us to look into biology-related subjects instead.

My son would like to attend Cambridge or Oxford for medicine to save a few years on his degree(s), and to experience studying at either institution and to study medicine at 2 of the best universities in the world, known to medicine. He will move back to the US after school and hopes to practice there. He is also applying to US universities and colleges. I am specifically curious if any Americans have been accepted for Medicine at either institution at the undergraduate level.

I know of an American who was at Cambridge for Medicine in 2009/10 or so- it does happen. I will ask my daughter & niece if they can find out if there are any American medics at their unis right now.

Here is a link that has all of the 6 (to 8) year combined med school programs in the US; Canada has a bunch as well. http://theperfectmed.com/programs.html</a></p>

You might also consider Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. They have a 5 or 6 year course (depending on course work done in secondary school) that culminates in an MD, which would be the direct route that your son is looking for. It is not, of course, Oxford or Cambridge, but it is a very well respected program, and would be a great overall experience. I know 2 American students who are thriving there, and Surgeons prides itself on its international student body.

Thank you very much. This is very useful information.

I don’t know if it was for Cambridge or Oxford, but their quota for internationals for their med intake is 8 (!!!). It’s due to hospital placements, which are largely limited.

I have heard that the quota is closer to 20, but they typically only take 8. Thank you so much for your help.

Burke1, come back after your UK visit & tell us how you got on!
