Which countries have strongest h.s. math?

My son will apply to be an exchange student for his junior year of high school. He will have already have had AP calculus AB. He will be learning a new language but it would be nice if he could continue to learn math or at least be in as strong a math class as possible. How would you rank the average high school math classes in the following countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Russia, South Korea, Turkey?

I read somewhere Finland ranked number 1 in Math.

I’m not aware of the AP course but below is the link for what we do in India. It varies slightly depending on the school but the basic framework is the same. Oh and Class 11 = Junior year and Class 12 = Senior year.

[CBSE Board Syllabus (2011) Mathematics Class 11th & 12th](<a href=“CBSE Board Syllabus (2011) Mathematics Class 11th & 12th”>CBSE Board Syllabus (2011) Mathematics Class 11th & 12th)

I don’t recommend China or India. Chinese learn math by sheer rote learning-doing lots and lots and lots of problems and then you get a notion of what types of questions you’ll encounter in tests. India would be better, but people there could speak English so well that they make you feel being at home. There won’t be many opportunities to practice Hindu languages, I suppose. So if your son wants to learn a new language& more math, I recommend Russia. Russia is very strong in high school math. I’ve read some math problems from Russian High School Math Competition, and I assure you they are strikingly difficult, much more difficult than USAMO questions. One defect you’d be aware-Russia is way too cold a place for most Americans. As for other countries, I don’t know much.

Public education is standardized in most countries. You can probably find syllabes for the math courses online, albeit written in the native language of each country. If you are ever interested in math education in Germany, Switzerland or Austria, I’d be happy to help.

Hong kOng! hehe

Russia, Iran, India (but it varies substantially from what I have heard), Romania (a huge thing here), probably all Balkan countries. Sorry for going off your list there. Turkey and South Korea have pretty strong programs too, and I think it would be rather hard to rank them based on the data we have. Also, the quality of teaching will differ quite a bit depending on the high school your son will be attending.

If your son does not yet speak the local language, how would he be able to follow a math class?

If it’s a priority for him to study math, you could look into distance education classes (e.g. EGPY at Stanford).

If you take into account coaching for the college entrance exams, Indian HS maths is by far the strongest. But for normal school curriculum, its not that big a deal.

RUSSIA! They are beasts at math!
