Which GOOD colleges don’t consider EC’s much??? Please help…

Since almost all the good universities claim that they use a ‘holistic’ approach while admitting students, it would be very difficult to say which good colleges DON’T consider EC’s much

Define ‘good’, please.

If good = Wichita State… No, they don’t consider them much. Nor do they consider grades much. Basically, they don’t consider anything much! ;)

If good = HYPSM, UCs (UCLA, Berkeley only), other Ivies, Duke, JHU etc. etc. - they all do (though Berkeley is more grade-oriented for Americans).

However, from what I’ve seen, Michigan, Gatech and Purdue don’t consider ECs that much- I know people with good grades, decent-good recos and average-ish ECs making it to these colleges. (Average-ish= member of 1-2 student groups, an internship/a few awards/a research project/community service)… :)

Public schools don’t look at ECs nearly as much as privates.

What about LAC’s???

Let’s take a step back. Any college will admit you if they are convinced that you can handle the academics and that you would contribute something to the campus environment that others wouldn’t. What you need is not a school that does not consider ECs. It doesn’t actually matter to you if they admit some students because they are very active outside of the classroom, does it? What you need is a school that would accept you purely on your academic merits.

How much of an academic superstar are you? You don’t need much ECs to get into Harvard. Winning the International Math Olympiad will do Kidding aside, almost any college will be interested in you if are academically better than their average student (test scores, GPA, etc), if your letters of recommendation say that you are an asset inside the classroom and if you are not asking for financial aid.

Talking about financial aid. Being a full-paying international customer can open many doors for you, especially at colleges with a small international student population and with limited or no financial aid available to international students. If you do need financial aid, you better be an academic superstar at the colleges you are applying to. One of the main reasons LACs give financial aid to internationals is that they hope those students will mingle with domestic students and bring an international perspective to the campus. But that requires that the international students are active outside of the classroom…
