Which is seen as "more challenging": IB Chinese A2 SL or IB Chinese B HL

I’m taking this in addition to 4 APs.

Assuming that I can get As in both of them…

IB Chinese A2 the level is significantly higher than IB Chinese B

but HL has a heavier workload than SL, for those familiar with IB. For example, IB English HL would read 15 texts or something, and SL would only read 9 texts or whatnot.

so basically, if I go IB Chinese B HL, i would go at a easier level with more work OR

IB Chinese A2 SL, i would go at a harder level with less work.

and sorry, IB Chinese A2 HL is not an option for me. i can barely handle 4 APs

**So which is seen as more challenging? **

Doesn’t matter; take the HL and save money.

not to sound spoiled or anything, but what if money is a smaller concern than any potential advantage i can get from taking one or the other in terms of college admins looking at challenging courses?

if it sets a minimal difference then i’ll take the HL.

still take the HL for the potential college credit…and yes, it does look better

sure thing. one potential drawback is that B HL corresponds to a “normal chinese class” level that i already took the previous year.

so if college admins really knew the school they’d know that i wasn’t moving ahead for a year. on the other hand, the SL would be skipping a level.

care to explain why HL may look better despite it being an HL of a lower level chinese?

Hmm…what state are you in? If CA, which HS?

I believe there is a catalog on the UCOP site with every college prep course offered by every HS in CA.

EDIT: <a href=“A-G Policy Resource Guide”>A-G Policy Resource Guide;

haha i’m not even in the states.

the thing is chinese B would really be going down a level or staying at the same level. if college admins know the slightest thing about the levels of our normal chinese classes then they’d know that i wasn’t moving ahead.

then again, A2 HL with 4 APs is… suicide for me.

well…what was the class that you took?

Chinese D which according to our course catalog corresponds to IB B HL.

So that means if i were to take IB B HL, i would be repeating Chinese D, its level at least.

i guess the college admins wouldn’t know it was a repetition. they probably don’t go that much into it anyways.

since you live outside the country, i doubt colleges will have a copy of your catalog

of course, if you were in CA, it would be a different story, since all HS register their college prep courses with the UC’s and CSU’s

that’s a good thing then. if they compare with the school they’ll find that there have been ppl who took the highest level A1 HL … but if they compare with the grade it might be a bit better.

I’m taking the IB Chinese SL Exam in about a month. Has anyone taken it, and how was it?
I’m really worried. My teacher is absolutely horrible, so I’m not very fluent and can’t read or write very well. Is there anywhere I can get a past exam? What’s the best way to prepare?

^ Ask your teacher for past papers?
