I considered the V2000 for christmas but ended up getting the HP Dv4000 (which is like 2 notches above the V2000) floor model at Staples for $805, which was a tremendous deal considering the power of the computer (Pentium M 1.6, DVD burner, 15.4" trubrite screen, 128MB video memory, etc etc.)

The v2000Z is the AMD version if I remember correctly, and it’s not really worth $1500 when for that kind of money you can get a kicka** PC from HP or IBM. The V2000 is basically Compaq’s bottom end computer.

The Z60 is a MUCH better choice in my humble opinion, but you’ll have to read the articles on these links. IF you have any further questions, the forums on that site led me to the Dv4000 and now I’m so happy I did my research instead of getting the V2000 like I was originally going to.

oneiros - you have a Compaq R320 which is from before HP merged with Compaq if I am remembering correctly. The V2000 is a COMPLETELY different Compaq. It’s built very similarly to the HP Dv1000, kind of like a Ford Explorer vs. Mercury mountaineer - they’re basically the same car, made by the same company but under a different name.

The V2000 is noted for kind of shotty built quality and a cheap feeling screen and keyboard.

I just wanted to make sure the OP knows that there’s a very significant difference between pre-merger Compaq and post-merger Compaq.

There are definitely some benefits in having a Mac (of course, as well as some not - you’d have to read a lot of biased things on both sides)… I have a Mac desktop, but a lot of the same things still apply and I can fully recommend the brand.

I still recommend checking out Cnet.com - it’s pretty well-respected as far as reviews go.

If I were you, I’d pick more reputable brands… like Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba, etc. Call me elitist, but I don’t trust budget brands from China. (Leveno, Asus, etc. - i’m assuming they are Chinese)

i almost threw up when i saw nhs’s comments…

thinkpads are the premiere laptops for businessmen!!

and one of the primary reasons im buying it is BECAUSE its Chinese (im Chinese, btw)

t43 is kinda boxy looking… thats why i was going for the widescreen

also, cnet is basically my homepage, everyone

ps, check out www.asia.cnet.com too, it has fancier stuff (its how i got my cell phone, samsung d500!!)

pps, compaq is officially out of the running

And yes, mine is from before the HP/compaq merger. Eh, I dunno, I love my lappy and would not trade it in for anything. My boyfriend has a thinkpad. I don’t like his, haha. He’s not fond of mine because of the touchpad mouse…which is the reason I adore mine. It was annoying at first, but then I got used to it and it’s wonderful. sigh But it’s ok, I understand, not feeling the compaq love.

i’m sure that dell/hp make better notebooks than asus the z71/z83 are both around 2000 and are the equals if not better in benchmarks than the equivalent dells or hp’s
