If you were going to remove a few schools from this list, which would you remove?

white male, Alabama resident, 4.0 BCMP, 3.9 cum GPA 32 MCAT balanced very good LORs and a Committee letter.
Chemical Engineering major

uab
usa
loma linda
usc - keck (calif)
gwu
miami
emory
loyola chi
tulane
bostonu
tufts
slu
wake
creighton
nyu
case western
temple
drexel
penn st
vandy
UT-H
UT-Galveston

i would keep nyu and leave off tufts (one of the most expensive) but bu has an “easy” secondary. case is known for engineering school so maybe that would be a good fit.

Since we’ve known about the H req’ts of keck, son did check and he does have them. But, I still think that applying to Calif schools is a waste. lol

If that were my list, I’d knock off any combo of: Loma Linda (doesn’t seem very well respected), USC (seems random at least geographically on this list), GW (numbers are heavily against you), Loyola (lengthy secondary and personally didn’t like old school curriculum style), BU (see GW), Tufts (see BU), SLU (pricey and old fashioned, in my opinion), Drexel (yikes geographically)–purely because I didn’t like those schools after researching them further.

(For the record, I applied to BU, Loyola, SLU, Tufts, and Drexel–waste of $$, looking back!)

As far as I can recall, yes, numbers are against you at GW too. Something about DC, apparently. I want to say GW is also ridiculously expensive, and one of the Georges is infamously known for its competitive environment and frequent impossibly difficult exams (approx the opposite of the environment I was looking for…) If you want to torture yourself, you can find the 10-11 applicants thread for a somewhat lengthy discussion about GW, Gtown, Tufts, and BU between me and Mike. I decided to Gtown because I’m Catholic, deep BU because of ties there, and tossed in Tufts just for the heck of it.

Then again, if the kid loves DC and thinks GW would be a dream, go for it! They have to pick someone, right?

And if you do Rochester, you might want to throw in an app to Albany medical college. I would definitely take off USC, Tufts, and Loma Linda. And why do you have penn state? Seems really random and I don’t know this for a fact, but I bet their OOS admissions rate is not favorable.

u of rochester is highly rated and their mcat scores aren’t off the charts. city itself is very live-able as well. housing is affordable and they have an airport nearby

OP,
I am not familiar with most. But I have a suggestion which is opposite of what you are asking. If you have CWRU on the list, it makes sense to ADD Norhtwester as in many cases they accept the same students. More so, sometime NwU would invite to interview after applicant is accepted to CWRU. CWRU will let you know very early. If interview is before Oct. 15. CWRU will let you know about acceptance few hours after Oct. 15 (or 16, do not remember) midnight. Yes, some schools are letting applicants know about acceptances in a middle of the night, and some even call (might happen 1 -2 am).

I agree with Miami, leave on case and possibly put on Northwestern. And in agreement with kristin, leave off SLU. And add URoch.

I might leave on USC. He is from a state they don’t have a lot of applicants from, his GPA is high, chem e major…leave off the rest from CA. It is not like he is applying to UCLA/UCSF.

And they are right about those numbers to GW, Gtown…not a fan of Drexel but its there with Temple (son loved it, but not the $$) and they will like his GPA as well.

No reachy reaches?

I figure you’re all in at this point, what can 1 or 2 hurt? Look at Curmie’s daughter at Y…heck my son for H? Don’t get your hopes up but 1 or 2?

Thanks for the insights. better idea of which ones to add to the existing app…and which ones not to add.

:)

As for reachy reaches…I think if he had a higher MCAT, he’d go for it. But with a 32, he thinks he’s very limited. We’re just hoping for one acceptance. :)
