Which Top College did You Turn Down???

Turned down Colgate/Lehigh/Bucknell for Gettysburg.

Gettysburg gave me a big scholarship, other schools gave me nothing.

for friedokra:

 1. getting the right balance of reaches, matches and safeties meant seven apps for D
 2. one app was to U Chicago EA - defferred then rejected
 3. one app was to an OOS Public w/rolling admissions. Accepted with merit aid
 4. one app was to private LAC w/rolling admissions. Accepted with merit aid
 5. one app was to WashU - waitlisted
 6. one was was to NU - waitlisted
 7. one was to Tufts - accepted.
 8. one was to UR, accepted with substantial merit aid.

Obviously, this one likes cold weather, and is very excited to be heading to Rochester after visits, accepted students receptions, alumni interviews, friendly letters and e-mails, etc. from all of the above (except Chicago and WashU).

It was nice to have some choices after all that work, too…

D turned down UVA/Echols Scholar, William & Mary, James Madison U for University of Pittsburgh - full tuition scholarship. Hail to Pitt! :)

I turned down the ham and cheese.

It smelled a little funky

friedoka, the admissions process at the Ivies and Ivy types is extremely unpredictable. There are many times the number of fully qualified applicants as there are spots, and for many people, it seems to be all or nothing. People are trying to hedge their bets by applying to several of those schools, and it generally either seems to work out (multiple acceptances) or not (like me–rejections and waitlists). Plus, some people simply hit it right at one school, and since they have no idea what school that will be, it makes sense to apply to quite a few.

Of course, sitting from the vantage point of someone who didn’t do so hot at the most selective schools, it can be frustruating to see people who have racked up so many acceptances–let the rest of us have a chance, damn it! :)–but of course it really doesn’t come down to that.

fredorkra-
Son applied to 14 schools. Valedictorian of Long Island HS doesn’t mean a lot as Long Island has lots of great HS’s. No school is really safe for males from here.

Choose the safe school as he loved it (see my early statements on this thread) and got a full ride. HE will succeed anywhere and probably would have loved many of his schools. The one he choose gave him a full ride and many opportunities. Every school has valedictorians/top students enroll, not just the Ivys.

Turned down UCLA and UCSD for San Jose State. Mainly cause of location.

friedokra–
What makes one apply to so many schools? Ego? Perhaps. But it is also the unpredictability factor–even a kid who has done everything “right” has no guarantee at any of these schools. So you hedge your bets. Also, the common app and the internet make it easy to apply to so many.

Since it’s close to the final day to submit that deposit. I’m just wondering which top colleges did people at CC turn down for a lesser known or prestigious school, and why?

Seriously, and I hear stuff like “Oh, I turned down Stanford for Yale.”

This isn’t a place to wack off your egos guys. The concept here is very simple.

UMich for Macalester.

Johns Hopkins= 47,000 per year
UVA/ Echols= full ride
Yale
Penn
Cornell
Umdcp Gemstone= full ride

All of you who are saying “I turned down Yale for Harvard” or something like that TOTALLY don’t get the prompt. The idea is turning down a top college for a LESSER well-known college…and no, Stanford does not count.

Oops. What Big Brother said.

My son turned down Cornell, Wash U, CMU (CIT - ECE and SCS), Johns Hopkins, USC, Vanderbilt and UT-Austin for Rice. Rice offered him a 1/2 tuition scholarship and a guaranteed research position for 2 years (w/an additional $8,000/yr for the 2 years). But I think it fit him so well he would have probably ended up there regardless – the only downside to him is the proximity to home. ;)

lawl…another thread to stroke your ego. hope you enjoy it

I turned down Cal, UCLA, and Stanford (feel bad about S) for Yale.

Harvard for Rice. :]

I turned down Dartmouth for Cornell.

pagEl60: Please. I thought people who got into Ivies were supposed to be able to read questions correctly?

Turned down Caltech, UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon SCS, and others to go to Olin.

^^^^^
I would have done the same for Olin.

I turned down Emory Scholars Program for Amherst College, I’m not sure if fthat counts for much.
