While you're waiting and sorting things out...

I’m not sure I’m allowed to provide a link, so if it gets taken out of my post, look up Top 5 Things You Are Tired of Hearing During College Audition Season by Chelsea Diehl. I especially liked the little videos embedded in the article. (I’m sure those have a name, but I’m clueless about it, lol!) It might make you laugh! It’ll certainly have you nodding your head.

So true. Both for my D auditioning for MT 2 years ago and my S auditioning for music performance (trumpet) this year.

Thanks @myloves I enjoyed the article. My D is applying for vocal performance programs. The very hardest thing right now is not knowing where she’s going to end up committing. Still in limbo waiting for merit offers (and a couple of “reach” accepts). slowly going insane

Since this is a “while you’re waiting” thread, I have to share that I discovered a new (for me) song: “On the streets of Dublin” from “A Man of No Importance.” It took me a few listens to really get into it, but now I’m slightly obsessed with finding every version of it on YouTube.

@chorisandstages, love that song. Been trying to get my son to sing it - maybe now that auditions are done.

I’ve never heard it; I’ll have to look it up.

We’ve been into Waitress songs at our house.

@claire74 it seems like a real challenge because of the accent. For example, Andrew Rannells does a really nice job of it in one video I saw, except he mostly just does a few token nods to the accent here and there. Then there’s a Rachel Bay Jones “folk” version in which she doesn’t do an accent at all, but that doesn’t matter because it’s a completely different take on the song (obviously being folk style and female.) Her version actually gave me goosebumps …

ah, but my son has Irish genes and does a killer accent. Must check out the girl version.

It is very amusing when they start taking dialects in school and can do “name that accent” all during dinner.

There are some great baritone songs in Man of No Importance, too – my S is working on a beautiful song, “Love Who You Love,” this semester in his voice studio. I’d love to see this show sometime, but it doesn’t get performed very often.

I’m curious about seeing the musical now…don’t even remember how I stumbled upon the song. Seems like I always end up liking male MT songs better than female even though I’m always looking for songs to recommend to my D!
