White House Internship

the APE i received scared me senseless. its never a good sign if a letter starts with thank you for applying to [so and so] program… my stomach dropped and then i realized it wsnt actually saying something we didnt already know.

Analytical - we are in the same boat and have similar dates. no vitals for me either.

@iskander, cool. If they are sticking to any type of schedule we should hear something by Monday or Tuesday.

In regards to the guy who got selected to intern in the ONDCP, I’m pretty sure the application and program is separate from the general internship program b/c it has like 10 different offices within it alone and its own internship page/app. Also spring start date is about a week sooner than the calander on WH application website, so they might be notifying sooner or selecting candidates in a totally different way. I was checking twitter and read that tweet and don’t remember them being a rankiable office on the app. Sorry it was just really bothering me that only one or two people would find out while I’m sitting here like a puppy, I’m ranting I just feel better about waiting now.

Background checks aren’t conducted until after you accept the conditional offer. Drug tests are done after that, on a later date. Notifications are on a “rolling basis” which honestly means “random”. Don’t hold your breath. You can be notified anytime between November to end of December. Just like applying to any other government/agency job. “Apply and forget.” You will be contacted either way, whether you get rejected or accepted.

I just was trying to point out that the specific intern position mentioned on twitter is a part of (from what I’ve been able to rconclude) a different Internship program and application process. The ONDCP internship position he was offered might have a different procedure specific to the office. It just seemed weird people were announcing acceptance and at this point because looking back at this thread, interviews and phone calls seem to happen up until the 11th hour, often closer to the start date than when rolling notification begins. Plus, I think the internship office asks you refrain from posting acceptance on social media websites. And with acceptance conditional initially, tweeting about it might not be something I would choose to do. I’m just saying, might seem like the same thing, but could be different, or not, but if you haven’t herd anything yet and see things happening for others (and that is going to happen), don’t stress, there’s still tons of time. I’d rather be the grand finale than the opening act any way. Forgetting you applied is so depressing, I’m really passionate about this opportunity and even up to this point has been so exciting I don’t really want to forget but I think a positive approach might help keep every ones blood pressure and anxiety level down other wise it’s going to turn into horse race coverage with who got what email and why I didn’t yet but they asked me for a writing sample, which sounds like the opposite fun.

Analytical - I really doubt we will hear by Monday or Tuesday.

Washington - Do they actually drug test? I know the website says so. However I have worked for other government agencies in the past that have similar statements but do not actually follow through. Im just curious if they actually hand a number of interns a plastic cup on their first day. I would be impressed.

I understand its stressful and annoying not to know about our application’s status but I dont think the WH is in any rush and I really dont actually predict hearing bck anytime before mid november at the earliest.

head-desk.

It may not be Monday or Tuesday, but if it’s not today, then it will be at least Monday or Tuesday!!!

anybody heard from chief of staff yet?? Any more interviews happened?

nothing new here.

i just looked back through this thread to find out when last year’s spring applicants heard about decisions, and it apparently wasn’t until something like 10 days into december! the date posted on the WH’s website for when rolling notifications began was later, so hopefully things won’t be THAT bad for us. it was still discouraging, though…

@iskander: Haha its the whitehouse, prepare to be impressed.

I don’t believe Chief of Staff interviewed for the fall (current session). They just picked an intern.

Last year it looks like the spring interns heard about two weeks after they were told the decisions were coming out…so hopefully it’ll be soon!

Fingers crossed for this week, seriously.

I have been a longtime lurker on this thread and have decided to post because I might have information not yet posted.

I was interviewed by an office last week, and there was an indication that all interviewing needed to finish by last friday.

If offices really did finish interviewing by friday, notifications should come out by thanksgiving.

Just out of curiosity, what makes you think that they didn’t interview this semester’s chief of staff interns?

COS was my first choice. I got interviewed by another department. If COS wanted me (haha, right?) would that override my interview with another department? Argh… this is all so painful.

pinkcupcakes - (love the name btw) thanks for the small tip. im pulling for a thanksgiving notification. that would be nice.

wh2360 - if a department other than COS interviewed you then they probably deemed you a better fit and a stronger candidate for that position. I also did not hear from my first choice and instead got interviewed with another department. but honestly, at this point, ill take what i can get.

any news from anyone yet?

I just finished an interview this morning with someone from the Office of the Vice President. :)

Question, if someone from a different department other than your top 3 departments interviews you, does that mean that if you are accepted into the program, you will be an intern in that particular department? Does that mean that you may not get into your top 3 departments? Just wondering. Thanks!

@ amplifiar i thought i saw that last year’s spring interns heard back in the 4th week after rolling notifications supposedly started. i didn’t look too thoroughly, so i’m hoping i missed something?

Ugh. I just really want to hear from CoS. Such a reach though. Communications dept. was my second choice. Anybody heard from them?

@iChristina2011, awesome! How did it go? What did they ask?

As for your question, I asked the department that interviewed me a similar question. They said that the office that interviews you is the one you will end up in if accepted. The person also mentioned if another office is interested they will call you for an interview. They also mentioned that the interview notes and or results go back to the internship office and they decide.

@sjrmeow - I’m a bit confused by some of the chatter in last November/December, but the first time I looked at it, I gathered that most were between 2-3 weeks after the start of rolling decisions. Regardless, it was definitely later than we will here. I hope, anyway. Their application deadline was a few weeks after ours. Spring 2011 applications were due on October 3, 2010. Their rolling notification date seems to have been November 15th, according to websites from the time, so yeah, you might be right.

Ahh…I do hope we hear sooner than a month after suggested. I suppose another two weeks wouldn’t be horrible…but I just really don’t want to hear from the other program where I applied until I’ve heard from the White House and that likelihood grows every day.

Additionally:
For last spring, a current White House intern was describing the selection process from his point of view (username “nostradamus”)…and I find it useful to know. What s/he writes more or less lines up with what I’ve heard of other competitive internship programs, in terms of the process itself.

On the process, Nostradamus wrote:
"I’m a current intern, absolutely loving it. This is what I’ve been able to piece together-- btw, it was just announced today that the deadline for spring is extended another week.

You submit your app, letters of rec. The internship office (which is comprised of one staffer and lots of interns and associates) go through and weed out the bulk of people-- then apps are sent to various offices where staff assistants will again look through and pick out people they think would be a good fit in their particular office. Then people get emails to set up phone interviews-- then if the person who interviewed you likes you, they send a recommendation back to the internship office, and most likely one or all of your references will be called. Then they make the final decision on whether or not to offer you the internship.

And if you don’t hear right away, don’t worry. I didn’t hear until a week after the suggested date on the website-- and I am here now. Just focus on writing a great essay, memo and really narrow it down to the office you’d like to work in. and fyi-- Counsel’s office generally only takes JDs."

Two weeks after the notifications theoretically started rolling out (in other words, about where we are now):
“fyi-- most of the interns have already been selected-- they are now just doing a preliminary vett to ensure there are no red flags. You’ll all find out soon enough.”

So perhaps the selections have already been made and they’re just combing through to make sure there are no obvious security risks.

I’ve heard from another recent intern (last summer) that Chief of Staff and Vice President are among the most difficult offices to get, so congrats, iChristina on the interview!
