White House Internship

@Kitty What do you mean by transportation costs? Are they going to help the new interns get down there or with the metro transportation costs? Do you also know if the WH will help accepted applicants find housing as well? thanks.

I’d much rather them help us find a place to Stay while we are there. For now I just bought a house here where I’m from so I have plenty of card boxes that we can all use while in DC. Lol, seriously though, I’m in the same boat kitty. Tons of places to look, and a little bit of time to get it all hashed out. Have you contacted your school to see of they’ll help you out. My school said they’re “working on it” so hopefully that will lead to something. If I hear anything more promising I’ll post it. Back to work.

@Kitty, I am planning on staying up in Arlington. They housing cost is almost half that of staying in DC, and its not too far via the metro.

But, I didnt hear anything about them helping with transportation. the plane tickets?

how will you guys be funding the internship? do you have money stashed away, or are you getting a grant/scholarship?

They are going to fund our metro passes is what a recent e-mail I got said. And I’m still working on how I’m going to fund this, it won’t be easy thats for sure! They are not helping with housing. They sent out one document that had information that previous interns compiled but its really nothing that I couldn’t find on my own. Just some general area/apartment buildings and which metro lines run through them. The housing is definitely my biggest issue.

@Gat0rba1t- I also just got a new apartment here in Pittsburgh with a one year lease, another big issue since I certainly can’t pay that rent and rent in DC!

Good news everyone, I just received my conditional acceptance letter for the Personal Correspondence Office.

I spent some time in Washington last year (my previous program covered it) so I am somewhat familiar with the area. I plan on using Craigslist and some other sites to find an appropriate place to live. It would be pretty sweet to meet and live with some of you, as we are all in the same position.

I look forward to reading this thread in the coming weeks, and good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!

@ palmguy: gratz! looking forward to working with you, and everyone else in about a month!

Congrats palmguy, I’ll be working with you directly as well.

Congrats Palmguy!! I will be working with you as well.

Here is a link to the ‘DC Intern Survival Guide’ I found surfing the web the other night.

There is some pretty good information if you want to check it out.

Hello, everyone!!

I’ve been reading up on this forum for a while, and I finally decided to register. Congratulations for everyone who has been accepted for the Spring 2012 White House Internship! I’m very happy and excited for each of you! As for those who were not accepted, perseverance is key! I’ll look forward to hearing that you’ve been accepted for another term!

I recently registered for the Summer 2012 White House Internship! This is definitly one of the greatest opportunities that anyone could even apply for. I’m very stoked to get an e-mail of any sort.

Anyway, its nice to read how everyone is very helpful on here! You all seem like great people!

Welcome ItsDanielYall. I recently just got an account, thought it would be appropriate since I had been following this thread for so long. I just applied to the summer session also, so we will both be going through this awesome journey of waiting. What offices did you apply to ?

nala1919 - I applied to the Office of Legislative Affairs, Office of Presidential Personnel, Office of the First Lady, Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Office of Management and Administration! How about yourself?

Congrats to those who have been accepted! I received my conditional acceptance last week and am figuring out housing and everything now. I am also a DC student, so if anyone needs any help on that front, let me know.

To those who haven’t received any word yet, patience is everything. A friend of mine just finished his WH internship after applying three times to the program, and this is my second time applying. Anyways, all decisions aren’t out until a week before the program starts, so there is still time to hear back. Good luck everyone!

Hey guys,

So, I got in. Yay! :D

I need to find affordable housing in the DC area pronto! Any tips or are some of you guys going do a joint WH intern housing thing? Please DM me on this site. I need all the help I can get. Thanks and Happy Holidays everyone!

gratz christina! the intern office will be sending you a bunch of info here shortly, and you you will get a packet of housing options around the DC area. thats where i found my apartment.

Has anyone settled on a place to stay yet? It would kinda suck to fly in and not have anywhere to go :(

Humble1 try Craig’s list. Probably your best bet if you are trying to save money.

Could anyone clue me in as to what the typical backgrounds are of applicants accepted to this program? Just recently took up an interest in this, but am a finance major with prestigious internship experience.

most interns seem to fall into the political science realm. but that clearly isnt the case for everyone. i am a recent Veteran, and am in my Sophmore year of Pre-Med.

I wouldnt worry too much about other ppls backgrounds, go in there and show them that you deserve to be an intern. it worked for me :).
