White House Internship

I also may have gotten myself into a little trouble for turning in the Departmental Review late because I did not check my e-mail.

You probably weren’t penalized for turning it in a little bit late. My guess is you were your department’s second pick following the interview process and that you would be accepted if their primary candidate failed vet or turned down the offer.

Wait-listed doesn’t have to be the end of the road. I’ve known several interns who were originally wait-listed, but then were accepted, either because the primary candidate did not pass his background investigation, couldn’t afford the internship, or had made alternate arrangements because of how long the WH application process took. If you don’t get an offer, apply again! I know someone who applied four times before he was accepted–I’m sure they appreciate persistence.

No worries, luckily I was able to find something that is paid, which is pretty much the only bad thing about the White House. I’ll be there January 5th I think. Have you gotten any details from them? The lady I spoke to was just like, “See you in January!”, lol…

Btw, you really should just allow private messages :p

@Politricks Funny. I didn’t even know I had PMs turned off. Interestingly enough, I can only send PMs once I’ve posted 15 or more times. Oh well, I have PMs on now. The only details I have from ISH are that I am confirmed for Jan 1 - May 15. Once I confirm my move in date, they said I will be assigned a room upon arrival. I guess I just have to wait, see, and hope I get a good place.

Thanks, WHPastApplicant!

This post-requirement to message people is killing me! And my department asked me to start a week early, so I think I’ll be moving to DC on the 5th, and starting on the 7th. I’m hoping we get orientation materials soon, I just feel kind of lost about what to bring haha, how to prepare.

So I’m not the only one who has not received orientation details as well? I’m completely lost and don’t even know what day I start…it’s stressing me out.

Regarding orientation details, I called the WH Internship Office yesterday and the person told me that details are sent out by individual departments so there’s no set time at work. The internship officially starts on January 15 but the orientation should give us more details regarding specifics about our department. I’ll be in DC during the first week of the new year so hopefully I should be allowing enough time.

Out of curiosity, I was accepted almost 2.5 weeks ago, submitted my acceptance papers but since then, I haven’t heard anything. I take it I’m not alone here?

So start date is dependent on the office?
Btw… Am I the only one out there who still hasn’t heard a yes or no? I need some comforting! Haha congrats to everyone who’s been selected already and good luck to our wait listed friends!

@WH2013CA, I haven’t heard yes or no yet either. This is my first time posting, so I should mention that I had an interview 2 or 3 weeks after submitting my application, and received/submitted the departmental review docs about three weeks ago.

I remember going through the internship/ job process as well. Please don’t stress out. When working/ getting accepted to a government agency, there is a LONG process that the HR specialists, etc have to go through so please be patient. I know this because I got a job interning at a government agency and saw what went on behind the scenes. Sometimes (especially for summer employees) it took 3 months to go through the review process (remember, these agencies are getting a lot of applications as well that they have to sort through). They really do try to get back to you as soon as they can.

@WH2013CA

The start date, unless otherwise directly requested, is January 15 for the Spring 2013 session. The orientation date is potentially different depending on the department.

@caapplicant2012 I have not heard anything either after the conditional acceptance email. So from your last post I’m gathering that you have already purchased your airfare? Crossing my fingers we hear this week!

caapplicant2012 - Thanks so much for the info :slight_smile:
TheSandPeople - Glad to hear I’m not the only one! Solidarity. Haha, hopefully we will get some (good) news sometime next week. Keep me updated!

@WH2013CA

No worries. Best of luck on your application! Hope you hear (good) soon.

Hey-

To those that got the departmental but are still waiting: How do you expect on booking tickets/finding housing within a month time frame? Also keep in mind it’s a non paid internship.

Anyone know when will be the latest we hear back?

@ddjph91 I suppose I’ll cross those bridges (tickets and housing) when/if I get there.

As for the latest we hear back, I know it can be pretty far into December. I had a friend who didn’t receive his acceptance until Dec. 15, 2011 for Spring 2012.

Wow, If I didn’t hear anything by Dec. 15th I would have moved on lol

Pending the internship, how do you guys plan on financing the 4-5months? What are expected Total Costs? Think Room and Board, Flights, Entertainment, etc.

Haha maybe I’m the only one who feels this way…but this is the WHITE HOUSE. They could call me the day before and I’d hustle out there. As much as I would love an answer ASAP, I will do anything and everything to make this happen despite time frame difficulties.
