White House Internship

^True, but you’re still working ~50 hours a week for free

I’ve done it before on the Hill - and trust me it has opened up other job opportunities & been extremely fulfilling. The White House would be doing ME a favor if I get selected, and you better bet that’s the attitude I would go in with! On another note, good luck to everyone in the middle of finals!

Nah, I get that. Of course you are going to approach your work with the utmost levels of seriousness and professionalism. I’m just saying it’s easy to get caught up in the big name brand of the White House, when really, you’re still just an unpaid intern, which is why it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get accepted.

I’m fully confident that everyone who is motivated enough to apply will go places in life :)

If you’re not interested in pursuing a near future in politics, say you want to head west to silicon valley ( think tech/start ups)…how valuable would a WH internship be?

Honestly I think the name brand of the White House will be helpful no matter the industry you plan to pursue. Obviously it’s incredibly helpful if you’re planning on lobbying or anything government-related, but most people, regardless of industry, understand how difficult to get and prestigious a WH internship is. I’m applying to multiple internships for summer right now that I’m not as qualified for, and I’m hoping the WH will push me a little farther, but we’ll see!

Why would anyone every want to go into lobbying? I’m new to this politics thing so I’m a bit confused.

It’s lucrative.

I was on the waiting list but I have not heard back. I am guessing at this point it is safe to assume that I will not be on board with the rest of you this upcoming internship season!

@corinthianspirit12 I know it’s stressful, but this is definitely something worth the patience in case it does work out. After all, until you hear otherwise, you’re still in the running. No matter what, this is still a great honor. Best of luck!

Does anyone not have housing or need a roommate for the spring session? Feel free to message me, I might need to find a place.

Thanks for the encouragement, caa. I am still “waiting,” but my hopes are not too high since it is nearing the end of December and not a word since I was placed on the waiting list.

Has anyone been on the departmental review and not heard anything back? As in not yet accepted/rejected/waitlisted?

And for those who did get accepted–was it a call or email? Congrats to you all!

Best of luck team.

The acceptance came in an email, along with a few other forms to fill out and send back. I have a friend on the waitlist too, and he hasn’t heard anything yet.

Can anyone who has been accepted post their GPA and extra curricular so I know what kind of ppl they want? And school!?? I dont go to an Ivy and i am just a freshman but working there is my dream!!! Would someone pls do that? I would REALLY REALLY appreciate that, im working my way up there!

hoscarlett - long story short, the white house is looking for more than just good grades and activities. sure, they want people who are intelligent and well rounded but those things are a byproduct of one’s initiative and a desire to be involved. there isn’t a special combination of classes, extras that you can do, or school to attend. know what you’re good at, hone the skills you have, and make the most of your situation.

that said, i can give you some general tips that could help you here and anywhere else you go. first, practice interviewing - especially over the phone. this one is tricky because it will be difficult not seeing the person you’re speaking with but this is a crucial step in the apps process. second, practice writing/speaking concisely and directly. people who interview are often very busy and see hundreds of apps so making yours descriptive yet brief is a plus.

you’re on a good track. i didn’t know about this program until my senior year of college. keep up the good work and best of luck to you.

If you’re headed to DC can you shoot me a PM?

is this the thread for summer 2013 applicants/does anyone know if there is one?

guess I can ask my question regardless of whether or not this thread is for the summer. How long was your resume? I have a curriculum vitae (academic resume) that is 3 pages but I know a standard resume should be 1 page. should I submit a work or an academic resume? and how many pages was yours?

help pleaaaase :)

The application stipulates one page. Unless you’re intent on Domestic Policy Council or a similarly analysis-heavy position, you should probably focus on your work experience over academic work.
