White House Internship

thank you! that’s a tremendous help. I’ll dwindle it down to the most important things then :)

Hello everyone, first time user/commentor. My question for those who have applied is how the formatting for the short answer questions were answered (i.e. “What are your educational goals?”), did you write those in formal paragraphs? Use bullets? I was not sure how eloquent I needed to make these responses, since it goes from “Favorite Song” to “What is your career goals?”

@sn269- 1 page resume. This is not an academic position or a graduate school application.

hoscarlett- I think your internship/job experience is weighted more heavily than your GPA. Like with most undergraduate programs, people with perfect GPAs and SATs are often denied admissions because admission committees desire more well-rounded applicants.

The most vital aspect of your application is your previous public service experience or your potential to start a public service career after interning at the White House in the near future.

tech1909- I would just format your responses in paragraphs. And make sure those lines are grammatically correct and sound.

Quick question - When ranking the various offices in your application, are there offices that are clearly for grads and others that are clearly for undergrads? I’ve read on this forum that grad students are often given more responsibility/get placed in more heavy policy analysis offices and wonder if its a waste of time for undergrads to apply for offices like the Domestic Policy Council.

@SovietDarkness - Short answer, no. It is never a waste to apply for an office you want to work in. Same thing goes for any job. Long answer, there are some WH offices such as the Office of Legal Counsel that typically go for law students. In these places, there is a certain skill set that the applicant should have a strong grasp of prior to start.

The decision is yours, but I say if you want to work someplace, show some conviction and just do it. No one could fault you for that.

Is there a link somewhere for the application for a White House internship? I think my son might be interested for when he is in college (2 more years).

Thanks.

has anyone submitted for Summer 2013?

@labbydog Here you go. [Apply Here | The White House](http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/internships/apply) :)

For Summer 2013-what did you guys write for the policy memo?

Just heard back from Fulbright and I didn’t get recommended only made me spend a few hours working hard on these essays. Hi, everyone I’m new to CC! Applying for summer 2013.

I wrote to the Office of the First Lady regarding a new travel awareness campaign for the Joining Forces Initiative with Michelle and Jill including some of the large private sector supporters they were able to influence in joining the initiative and increasing publicity and entering into more sectors of the workforce as they visit the 10 most veteran populated cities in the US as a summer 2013 tour. What did you write about?

iChristina2011 - Any helpful tips for the 1st essay that discusses commitment to public service and the one instance you asserted leadership, etc. It’s one of those prompts that can easily trick an applicant in sounding way too cliche and bore a reader, and I am trying to avoid that absolutely.

Do they require transcripts?? For some reason I don’t see it listed in the required documents. Are we supposed to send it directly to the organization? Do they accept unofficial transcripts?

^ (Summer internship, btw) I feel like I have to just be blindly missing this- If anyone could point me in the direction of where information regarding this is, I would be highly appreciative.

I do not think a transcript is required unless you are at least interviewed. This is my first time applying but I know for a program such as this they would explicitly have it on the application requirements and such. Therefore, I am quite sure it’s something that is requested if selected to interview or some way in that part of the process!

ThankS IRnerd!

Hi Everyone. I am not really used to writing policy memos but just wanted to know if we should include references in the memo? Any help would be appreciated.

Definitely attribute phrasing and ideas that are not your own to the author, but I don’t think you need to use footnotes. For example, “On September 2, Secretary Hillary Clinton said…” or “In his global analysis of existing assault weapons bans, Author X describes…”

If you can cite within sentences like that, no need for footnotes/endnotes/parenthetical citations.

@amplifiar842 Thanks for the feedback. I have made citations to sources within sentences. Just wanted to be sure I was doing it the right way.

I applied for summer 2013!
